Can rapeseed oil replace olive oil as part of a Mediterranean-style diet?
Canola Oil (Rapeseed Oil) is often suggested as an alternative to Olive Oil for people who live in countries where Olive Oil is not produced locally. However, those two are quite different and may not have the same effect.
In a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition, researchers reviewed all the evidence regarding the benefits of Rapeseed Oil. They noted that the evidence for cardiovascular protection for Olive Oil was strong, while this for Canola Oil limited, and went on to conclude that Canola Oil cannot be recommended as a suitable substitute for Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Furthermore, recently scientists in Pennsylvania published an article in the journal Scientific Reports claiming that, Canola Oil is actually linked to obesity, memory impairments and other harmful effects on the brain.
