The last of my series on the house of lorraine is perhaps the most famous member considered one of histories great military leaders charles V duke of lorraine and bar knight of the golden fleece generalissimo and field marshal of the holy roman empires army. Born in 1643 at vienna the son of duke Nicolas francois and claude francoise of lorraine. The fremch invaded lorraine forcing his uncle duke charles 4 to resign making his father Nicholas duke but the french invaded again in 1634 and Nicholas resigned giving the title back to charles 4 who spent most of his reign in exile while the french ruled lorraine. Charles V was born while his father was in exile and it was not likely he would succeed his uncle so he joined the habsburgs in 1662. He gained distinction as a soldier 1st in 1664 at the battle of saint gotthard under famed general montecuccoli. He continued serving the empire fighting the french. He was wounded at the 1674 battle of seneffe and fought at the 1676 siege of philippsburg earning promotion to field marshal. He survived smallpox and falling off a bridge in 78 and became viceroy of tyrol. In 1683 the ottomans sieged vienna in one of europes most important battles he was the generalissimo of the imperial army sent to save the city. He was hugely outnumbered but set up nearby to raid the turks and sneak food into the city. Soon the holy league army under king jan 3 sobieski arrived and together they routed the turks saving the empire. In the subsequent great turkish war he supported by the margrave of baden, elector of bavaria and eugene of savoy won a series of victories at neuhausel buda and mohacs in 5 years he pushed back 100 years worth of turkish conquests. He turned on transyvania in 89 forcing its surrender. The turks ally king louis the 14th of france invaded to stop the collapse of the ottomans. He was sent to lead the imperial army on the rhine he won a series of victories but grew ill and died at wels in 1690 aged only 47 his life was seen as tragic he never retook lorraine from france even king louis the 14th said i have lost the greatest wisest most generous of my enemies.
