When it comes to so-called "greatest hits" compilations, Mr. Wunderkind has always been ambivalent about the artist's and (more so) record label's motives. On one hand, the greatest hits provide a retrospective snapshot of the artist up to that point. On the other hand, its a pretentious and lazy excuse for an artist to release an album (either contractually or for self-aggrandizement) while sneakily putting new songs on these releases. New fans can see what the artist is all about, where longtime fans only add to their collection assuming the greatest hits have 'alternate' versions of the A-Sides and popular B-Sides.
In the case of GODFLESH, the band and label (EARACHE RECORDS at the time) decided to release their "greatest hits" with additional hard-to-find tracks that many of us long-term fans have been clamoring for. The double disc IN ALL LANGUAGES (July 2001; Earache Records) was released prior to GF dissolving in 2002 (The band reformed in 2010). It is all that you would expect, plus more from the band that practically invented nihilistic #IndustrialMetal! DISC 1 (Flesh of God) has all the singles from their self-titled GODFLESH (album/EP) through US AND THEM, including the the SLAVESTATE EP. DISC 2 (Beyond the Flesh) are a collection of obscure tracks from other compilations, live tracks from JOHN PEEL's BBC Sessions, extended mixes, B-Sides, and remixed tracks from the aborted US AND THEM IN DUB album. The sludgy, slow burn #IndustrialMetal "Love Is A Dog From Hell" (Disc 2) is THE clear standout, an absolute favorite of mine, and surprised GF didn't include it on any of their albums. But, I digress and glad it is available when it was impossible to find.
IN ALL LANGUAGES is a greatest hits comp I can honestly say I AM NOT ambivalent about! It has everything I wanted in a retrospective plus additional goodies I've been searching for (more than 15 years) that were out-of-print or otherwise on other releases. And that, is what a greatest hits album should be about. #MrWunderkind #Godflesh #JustinBroadrick #GCGreen #Industrial #IndustrialMetal #EaracheRecords #InAllLanguages #THEONLYBANDTHATMATTERS
