In the realms of Metal, Industrial Metal, Doom Metal, and Ambient Noise, no band is as cold and nihilistic as GODFLESH. Sure, some metal and industrial bands test their mettle by attempting to be 'more nihilistic than everyone', but they're just posers! GODFLESH, for nearly 30 years (counting their hiatus/breakup), have consistently proved their mettle with their dystopian future of the world engrossed around extremely lo-fi guitar riffs (Justin Broadrick now rocks an 8-String guitar where he can go even lower in tuning), G.C. Green's "heavy, downtuned, and driving bass" (quoted from Green, himself), and the coldness of their '3RD bandmate': Machines (drum programming, synths, etc.). That nihilism especially plays out in MESSIAH (Original release: 1995 to members of the band's fan club. Re-released in 2003 with remixes; Avalanche Recordings). One of their most unforgiving releases, it get emotionally frigid on the title track "Messiah". Seriously detuned, droning guitars penetrates through remorseless, rumbling bass, mechanical drumming, and Justin's ethereal/guttural vocals makes me apathetic to the notion that the band set the world ablaze! Things go hip-hop with heavy slatherings of Killing Joke guitar and uneasy bass with the spooky "Wilderness of Mirror". "Sungod" is classic GODFLESH: driving beats, more rumbling bass, loud guitars, and near spoken word vocals. "Scapegoat" is GF experimenting with different a #breakbeats with a #heavymetal punch in the face, gut, and throat!
I can do without the remixes as they are more extended versions of the originals with some added beats and effects. The original are fine as they are!
MESSIAH is one of those 'unreleased releases' GODFLESH kept for the hardcore acolytes, initially. The band realized the already initiated and converted would grasp their true nihilism. The world wasn't ready for the impending dark storm. It wasn't until Justin releasing it to the public in 2003, that the many embraced their grim visions as well. #Godflesh #Messiah #JustinBroadrick #GCGREEN #AvalanvcheRecordings #AllBetsAreOffTuesday #MrWunderkind #THEONLYBANDTHATMATTERS #TheHarangue #Industrial #IndustrialMetal #ambientnoise #metal
