I love it when people tell me the #hiking is harder out west. It’s not. For the most part, trails out west are graded for horse travel and the footpaths are moderate in difficulty. Rocks aren’t harder on one coast or the other. But I can tell you that the eastern trails are full of rocks. Some parts of the trails are just straight up rocks, they don’t even bother moving them or routing the trail around them. To call these sections like in the first picture a footpath is laughable. My feet are way more tired from 12 miles on the AT than 20 in the Sierra, Colorado, or Arizona. The muscles it takes to keep you moving when your footing is constantly changing is more tiring than just plugging along on the PCT at 9,000 ft. Also, the elevation thing is nonsense. You don’t even notice any difference in oxygen between 1,000 ft and 10,000. Sure, get above 12,000 ft and you will notice, but other than the temperature the peaks of the east are just as hard as those of the west.
