Junior Seau is the most recognizable modern player to have had CTE. He played 20 seasons in the NFL, but began his football days at 9 years old playing for Oceanside Pop Warner, in Oceanside, California. He went on to play at Oceanside High School, and then USC. He was a first round draft pick in 1990 by the San Diego Chargers.
Tiaina Baul Seau Jr. (/ˈseɪ.aʊ/; SAY-ow; January 19, 1969 – May 2, 2012), better known as Junior Seau, was a linebacker in the National Football League (NFL). Known for his passionate play, he was a 10-time All-Pro, 12-time Pro Bowl selection, and named to the NFL 1990s All-Decade Team. He was elected posthumously to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2015.
Junior took his own life by shooting himself in the chest in 2012 at the age of 43. He did not leave a suicide note. His family sent his brain for autopsy to the National Institute of Health for examination and was found to have Stage II CTE.
