Rewatch: Ghost in the Shell (2017)
Original Score = 8/10
Current Score = 7/10
I feel like I'm constantly defending this film. People may not like the film, which is fine. But for people to give this ridiculously low scores is just absurd. There is atleast something here for people to admire. The visual effects are tremendous, futuristic cityscapes have never looked so good. I thought Johansson's performance was perfect. She was able to capture the monotonous expressions of a machine and yet still convey emotion during scenes where Major's memories are no longer being suppressed. The musical score was deliciously electronic and had an authentic techno vibe to it that suited the environment. The story is fine, it does deviate slightly from the original but for western mainstream audiences it functions well. In my second viewing, I found that the philosophical themes regarding identity, souls, implications of combining human and machines etc. could've been explored much deeper and yet still keep a lighter tone. The screenplay is not particularly engaging and the action scenes are infrequent, however the minimal action that is presented is gorgeous to look at. Look, I'm a simple reviewer with simple needs. Everyone knew this was not going to replicate the original's thought-provoking themes that made it what it is today. All I wanted was a visual spectacle with a decent story that kept me entertained and engaged, and it did that. I don't care for any whitewashing excuses. It's a Hollywood film. If you didn't like the casting choice before watching it, then why watch it in the first place. I may have got slightly too defensive in my first viewing, hence the higher score, but I'm happy with the current rating.
