There are a lot of new faces around here & so I wanted to take a moment to say, “Hello!” & introduce myself.  My name is Julie Fei-Fan (pronounced faye fan) Balzer.  Fei-Fan is my middle name & it’s Chinese (like my Mother). I’ve been told that it means “unique.”
.
I never thought that I would be an artist.  Growing up, I loved art class & making things, but I figured that since I couldn’t naturally sit down and draw realistically, I clearly didn’t have the talent.  If only someone had explained to me what I know now: drawing is a skill to be practiced & learned AND it isn’t the only hallmark of being an artist!
.
I lived in New York City for sixteen years, where I put my college degree in theatre to good use as a theatrical director.  While I don’t direct plays anymore, you can catch me singing show tunes most days of the week.
.
Around 2013, I decided to take the leap & make art my full-time career!  I was in the midst of getting divorced & it was a truly frightening time.  I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to support myself in this career.  But, I worked hard & got lucky, & thank goodness, it worked out!
.
About 2 years ago I moved back to my hometown outside of Boston and met a sweet man who agreed to live in an apartment filled with weird colorful faces, random giant eyes, & a lot of art supplies.
.
My Instagram feed is filled with art & craft & travel & more. I use a few hashtags to help keep things organized:
.
#julielovesart = museum/gallery pics
.
#balzerdesigns = items made with my licensed products (stamps, stencils, & more!)
.
#makeitartsytv = the TV show I host on PBS
.
#artjournaleveryday = hashtag I started years ago to encourage folks to share daily art journal pages
.
Plus: #whatjuliemade #julieinthestudio #whatjulietaught #julielikeseyes #travelsofjulie #balzervideo
.
I wrote a book: #carvestampplay & host #carvedecember — carve a stamp/day in Dec
.
If you want to connect with me in other places, I blog M-F, you can watch my daily adventures in my weekly vlog on YouTube.  My Mom & I host a sporadic podcast called Adventures in Arting (find it on iTunes). I’m balzerdesigns across social media. And I teach classes online & in-person.

My first time visiting @thewadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, CT. The museum is lovely and I thought the signage was great. I learned a lot from the wall cards and enjoyed myself along the way. Took a “highlights tour” with a docent too. Swipe through to see a (brief) photo & video tour (more in my insta stories). You will see: the gorgeous #sollewitt mural in the Atheneum’s Great Morgan Hall, 2 detail photos of a lovely painting by #AliceNeel, a detail from a painting by #johnsingersargent, detail of a painting by #louisanquetin (love the way he’s capturing the light), two details from two different #Picasso paintings (love the 🐟), and finally a fall-front desk that I am coveting hard. It was made by an enslaved man named #WilliamHoward. There are just 5 other examples of his beautiful work known to exist in the world. #julielovesart

Had a great time at the opening of the Klimt/Schiele drawings exhibit at the #mfaboston tonight! Always interesting to look at sketches. I think they tell you so much about that artist’s thinking/process. This sketch is watercolor and charcoal from Schiele. #egonschiele

Yesterday I ran through #MoMA inhaling as much art as I could in an hour. I particularly loved the exhibit of work by @tarsiladoamaraloficial and #thelongjourney exhibit, looking at work from the latter part of great artists’ careers. #julielovesart #momanyc

Currently in #NYC for 36 hours of art, food, and family. Charged through the @metmuseum this afternoon. Always overwhelming and delightful to visit this Mecca of art and craft and history and culture. My head is so full of ideas and patterns and thoughts. One of the exciting things about #themetropolitanmuseumofart is its epic size. It’s so ginormously vast that you can have a wildly different art experience every single time you visit. There simply aren’t enough hours in the day (or shoes comfortable enough) to see it all. But I’m going to try! 💪 #julielovesart PS: More #museumpics in my Instagram story!

Eye 👁 got to see the #mcescher exhibit at #mfaboston today and it was fabulous! I particularly loved the #tesselations (check my stories to see them). I am left with so much to think about — which is exactly how I want a museum to make me feel. I feel inspired and excited to create! #julielovesart

Tonight I spent about an hour in the #mfaboston galleries sketching before #mfamuseumcouncil Game Night. (PS: My team won!!! But that’s a whole other story! 🏆 You can hear me brag about the win in my Instagram story. 😁) As I was sketching, I was reminded of something I once heard the great #MiltonGlaser say: “You never really see something until you draw it.” It’s so true. The act of drawing forces a level of observation beyond normal seeing. I think everyone — even if you can’t draw; remember drawing is a practice — should sketch from time to time. It really opens up your brain and your eyes! 👀

Last night I stood and drank in the sight of #FranzKline and #PeterVoulkos in conversation. Franz Kline has long been a favorite of mine. His huge gestural (mostly) black and white paintings are filled with emotion and architecture and movement. Peter Voulkos is new to me. But I was charmed by his abstract sculpture. I was at the museum for a meeting (late due to traffic) and then rushing off to dinner. BUT I made the time (5 minutes is enough) to make sure I saw a few pieces of art before I left the museum. I am very lucky to live close to a great museum. But the next time you’re on your way somewhere and you pass an art gallery or an exhibit at a coffee shop or a mural, I think it’s worth making the time (again, 5 minutes is enough) to take a look and drink it in! As much as I love scrolling, there is nothing like seeing art in person. #julielovesart #mfaboston #abstractart #modernart

4 Fridas. 🙌 This was actually in the bathroom 🚽 of the resort where we ate lunch. 😬😂 #artiseverywhere #fridakahlo #frida #julielovesart

Spent the afternoon at the #PortlandMuseumOfArt and fell in love with this wooden carving by #BernardLanglais. Just absolutely mind blowing. 🙌 Swipe left to see some detail photos. 👌 I was hoping to take it home with me, but alas, the museum seems rather attached to it...😜 #julielovesart #portlandmaine #ihavethisthingwithmuseumpics #artmuseum

When @mfamuseumcouncil says “Come to #NYC and skip the epic line at the #DavidZwirnerGallery,” you show up in NYC!! It was a cold morning, but by 9:45am the line to get into the gallery wrapped around the block!! 😱 We were whisked past the line and into the magical world of #yayoikusama and then the calming grandeur of #richardserra (where you were allowed to touch the sculptures!!!) Swipe left for a peek at the fun! All in all it was the kind of amazing morning that art lovers’ dreams are made of! 😍🙌💪😁 #julielovesart #museumcouncil #mfamuseumcouncil #gallerywalk #davidzwirner #nycart #infinityroom #yayoikusamaexhibition #sculpture

Last day of #QuiltFestival and I have fallen in love with the charming and whimsical work of @suespargo 🙌 So inspiring. #Quilts full of texture and lovely details. 😍 Swipe left to be enchanted! #iqf #julielovesart #wool #applique #quilting #suespargo

This morning I literally used up my entire phone battery taking photos of amazing quilts here at #QuiltFestival in #Houston. I was particularly blown away by the display of #quilts by #DannyAmazonas. So Amazing! So inspiring! They make me want to go home and make things. 🙌🎉 Swipe left to see a small sampling of his staggeringly cool #artquilts! He is a master of illusion and color! #iqf #quiltfestival2017 #julielovesart P.S. See more of his work in my Instagram stories (click on my profile photo).

Detail of a quilt by Barbara LaBrake. I *hate* mornings. But I am working in a booth at #QuiltFestival all day long. So, every morning I get up two hours early so that I can sneak into the quilt show and actually see the amazing quilts. This morning I only managed to see three aisles in 90 minutes. And this quilt is part of the problem. I was absolutely gobsmacked by the exhibit of #VanGogh inspired quilts. Each participant created a small quilt using the same fabrics, but any technique, and all inspired by VanGogh’s work. They were amazing and overwhelming and impressive. Swipe left for a taste of the awesomeness! 🙌 #inspired #quilt #quilting #artquilts #julielovesart #iqf

I was blown away by the #murakami exhibit at #mfaboston 🙌👏👍😍🎉❤️💪 I loved the curation of the exhibit — seeing the ancient roots of Murakami’s work was fascinating and enlightening. Plus, the scale of the artwork is jaw dropping. I will definitely be back through! Lots to think about!!! #julielovesart #mfamuseumcouncil #ihavethisthingwithmuseumpics

Really loved the #LouiseBourgeois exhibit at #MoMA. I wouldn’t say that everything was beautiful. But I would say that it was packed with ideas and brimming with intelligence and I even laughed out loud while reading some of her text. (The man next to me laughed out loud about 10 seconds later. I guess he was a slower reader. 😜) Definitely worth a visit if you’re in #NYC. #julielovesart #modernart

I wasn't sure what to expect from the Kuniyoshi vs. Kunisada exhibit at the #mfaBoston. But, I loved it and I must go back for a second look! The artwork is extraordinary. (This is a woodcut print, btw, not a drawing!) The layout and curation of the exhibit is wonderful. Already looking forward to seeing it again. #kuniyoshi #kunisada #julielovesart

One more from the #TateModern. I had such a great time. This monumental horse painting is by #SusanRothenberg and I literally gasped when I saw it. 😍 #julielovesart

Visited the #TateModern for the first time. So much to think about and be excited by. We spent most of the day there and saw less than half the museum. Loved it. Hope to make it back! 🤞 #london #julielovesart
