Jumping in a skirt turns out to be dangerous...😳😬 Luckily this photo didn’t have my skirt flying up too high. 😜 Happy to stumble upon this mural in Cambridge while on my way to the art supply store! Really, that’s a win-win kind of day! 💪😄

Thought for the weekend. 🙌 It’s time to get out and explore because somewhere something incredible is waiting to be known!

#tbt to the Museé d’Orsay in Paris. If you swipe through:
.
Manet: I love the direct gaze in his portraiture.
.
Toulouse-Lautrec: a master of capturing simple moments with bold lines
.
Cezanne: I know him for his still lifes (I looked it up — the plural of still life is still lifes, not still lives) but I loooove the impasto work on this portrait
.
Bouguereau: it’s all about the flesh — look at the grip of those fingers!
.
Chauveau: I adore his grotesque monster sculptures. They’re quite petite in real life.
.
van Gogh x3: This was the biggest collection of van Gogh’s I’ve ever seen in person. I was gobsmacked!
.
One of the giant clocks at the museum — it used to be a train station!
.
And last but not least, a Monet portrait. I love his figures. I know it’s all about the waterlillies and haystacks, but for me, it’s his portraits.
.
Lots more photos on my blog if you’re interested! #julielovesart

The Louvre in ten photos? Impossible! But, I have picked ten of my faves to share with you today. 🙌 Swipe left. ◀️
.
The process of being forced to winnow my faves down to just ten was actually quite elucidating. Swiping through these photos I can see the things I’m always drawn to: people, hands, pattern, architecture, and light vs. shadow. No photos of landscapes 🏞 — though the museum had plenty. No photos of animals 🐒 — though the museum had plenty. No photos of flowers 💐 or trees 🌲 — though the museum had plenty.
.
I think we are all naturally drawn to certain subjects — whether creating art or viewing it. What do you look at in museums?

How about a #tbt to the @mfaboston Summer Party! 🎉 As you know, art is an enormous part of my life. It's what I do and it's part of who I am. I have met some of my best friends through art (including @jennxmonger seen posing hard in the photos above). Since moving to Boston, the #MFABoston has been a part of most weeks of my life. I've taken classes, wandered the galleries, attended lectures, dined, sketched, met up with friends, and even had one of my first dates with @sleights_ there. When I travel -- for work or for pleasure -- I make an effort to see the local art museum. I think art museums are vitally important to our society. If it has been a while since you've been to an art museum, perhaps it's time to plan a visit!? And if you don't have an art museum near you, and don't have any plans to go anywhere, there's always your local library or quilt guild or art guild. Many of these local organizations host art exhibits throughout the year. And if they don't, maybe you could be the one to start the art revolution in your hometown! #julielovesart P.S. Photo booths forever!!

Spending the weekend with two of my out-of-town friends and I just *had* to take them to @mfaboston where we saw a lot, but most notably: the pastel exhibit and the Casanova exhibit. Both worth a visit if you’re in the area. (Swipe left for photos of those exhibits plus more.) #julielovesart
.
I met @rivim and @betty21401 when we all lived in NYC and worked (together) in the theatre. We met at different times, but I think the three of us have been friends for more than 12 years? We now live in 3 different states, so it’s wonderful to be together! I think the last time the 3 of us were all in the same room was for @rivim’s wedding almost 2 years ago. It’s a lucky and wonderful thing when the stars align and we can make a weekend together work! Plus I got a major abs workout from all the laughing! 🤣😂😆 #girlfriendsarethebest

Happy Independence Day! This is a detail shot of Jasper John's iconic "Flag" painting from 1954, currently on display at MoMA in NYC. Johns created many different flag paintings in his lifetime, at least one of which was on display in the window at the now defunct Bonwit Teller department store in NYC. My understanding is that much like today's store windows at Bergdorf Goodman -- the Bonwit Teller windows featured work by contemporary artists of all kinds as a backdrop to the fashions the store offered. Isn't that cool? #julielovesart

Black canvas? Or is it more? I went on a tour of the Rothko exhibit at @mfaboston and one of the things the curator said really stuck with me and so I thought I'd pass it along. Apparently most people glance over the artwork in a museum pretty quickly -- just a matter of seconds. She challenged us to get up close (or as close as the ropes allowed) with a Rothko painting and really observe it for one full minute. One minute is a long time, you guys! I stared and stared and stared and my mind wandered and came back and I did start to notice some things about the painting I had never seen before. It turns out that there was more than just black. Who knew? Have you ever really stared at a painting and had the experience change your mind about what you were seeing?

When I'm in a new place, I always yelp my way to good eats. I'm happy to say, yelp didn't let me down. The food was delicious at @munchcle but I also loved the decor -- in particular, this Basquiat-esque painting had me enthralled from the moment I walked in. I love it when restaurants make bold art choices. I realize that this painting may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I think it's super fab. In my opinion, it's so much nicer when public art has a point-of-view. Love it or hate it, it makes you feel something instead of just glancing over its blandness. I think the point-of-art is to communicate. And this piece talks to me! Do you agree or disagree?

Night at the Museum. 🙌 We had so much fun tonight at the @mfamuseumcouncil Summer Party. There was dancing 💃 🕺🏽 and drinking 🥂 and dessert 🍰 and performance art 🤔 and a silent auction 💰 and one heck of a fabulous photo opportunity 📸 — All to support the @mfaboston. (I danced until they kicked us out at midnight!)
.
The Museum Council is the “young professionals” membership tier at the MFA. I signed up when I first moved to Boston 3 years ago. I wanted to meet people who loved art as much as I do and to get an insider’s view of the museum.
.
Two years ago I joined the Museum Council Steering Committee in order to give back to the Museum by volunteering my time and energy.
.
And now, I’m delighted and excited to share that I’m the incoming Vice Chair of Events for the Museum Council Steering Committee! 🎉 I’m super excited to help plan events and programming that further the Museum’s mission and get people geeked out about art. #artisawesome.
.
If you live in the Boston area, are under 50, like art, and enjoy getting a backstage peek at exhibits, talking to curators, and finding like minded friends, I hope you’ll consider joining the Museum Council this year! We have a great time and there’s so much to learn as you give back to the Museum and get more involved. 👍

Two fabulous patterns in metal discovered on my walk through Boston today. The first is a decorative grate surrounding a tree emerging from the sidewalk. (I assume it’s there so that the tree roots can move around without lifting up the sidewalk, but if someone knows the real answer, I’d love to hear it!) The second (swipe left) is a beautifully patinated window grate (is that what they’re called?) — I love that verdigris color!
.
I go to a lot of museums and galleries, but I am also aware that art is all around us! It’s in nature, architecture, sign posts, serendipitous alignments, and so much more. The trick is to keep your eyes open! And your mind too! The older I get, the more I realize that the artistic skills most worth nurturing in myself are curiosity and observation. 👍

Spent the afternoon at the Columbus Museum of Art @columbusmuseum in Ohio. Here is a quick highlights tour (swipe left): bronze 🐎 (looks like driftwood) by Deborah Butterfield, The Swimmer by Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Chaim Soutine landscape (yellow houses), detail of a Mary Cassatt painting, video of a zoetrope in action, “Happy Mother” sculpture by Chaim Gross, and a detail of a Derain painting. This was my first visit to the museum and I really enjoyed it. Lots of interactive opportunities — from the intellectual to the artistic. #julielovesart

The @mfaboston is hosting its annual #artinbloom exhibition (today is the last day)! Scattered throughout the museum are gorgeous arrangements of flowers meant to reflect particular works of art in some way. It’s super fun to think about why or how each arrangement was inspired. 🤔🙌👏 My favorite is this first arrangement, inspired by #watsonandtheshark. 🦈

There are a lot of new faces around here & so I wanted to take a moment to say, “Hello!” & introduce myself.  My name is Julie Fei-Fan (pronounced faye fan) Balzer.  Fei-Fan is my middle name & it’s Chinese (like my Mother). I’ve been told that it means “unique.”
.
I never thought that I would be an artist.  Growing up, I loved art class & making things, but I figured that since I couldn’t naturally sit down and draw realistically, I clearly didn’t have the talent.  If only someone had explained to me what I know now: drawing is a skill to be practiced & learned AND it isn’t the only hallmark of being an artist!
.
I lived in New York City for sixteen years, where I put my college degree in theatre to good use as a theatrical director.  While I don’t direct plays anymore, you can catch me singing show tunes most days of the week.
.
Around 2013, I decided to take the leap & make art my full-time career!  I was in the midst of getting divorced & it was a truly frightening time.  I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to support myself in this career.  But, I worked hard & got lucky, & thank goodness, it worked out!
.
About 2 years ago I moved back to my hometown outside of Boston and met a sweet man who agreed to live in an apartment filled with weird colorful faces, random giant eyes, & a lot of art supplies.
.
My Instagram feed is filled with art & craft & travel & more. I use a few hashtags to help keep things organized:

#balzerdesigns = items made with my licensed products (stamps, stencils, & more!)

#makeitartsytv = the TV show I host on PBS
.
#artjournaleveryday = hashtag I started years ago to encourage folks to share daily art journal pages

Plus: #whatjuliemade #julieinthestudio #whatjulietaught #julielikeseyes #travelsofjulie #balzervideo

I wrote a book: #carvestampplay & host #carvedecember — carve a stamp/day in Dec

If you want to connect with me in other places, I blog M-F, you can watch my daily adventures in my weekly vlog on YouTube.  My Mom & I host a sporadic podcast called Adventures in Arting (find it on iTunes). I’m balzerdesigns across social media. And I teach classes online & in-person.

My first time visiting @thewadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, CT. The museum is lovely and I thought the signage was great. I learned a lot from the wall cards and enjoyed myself along the way. Took a “highlights tour” with a docent too. Swipe through to see a (brief) photo & video tour (more in my insta stories). You will see: the gorgeous #sollewitt mural in the Atheneum’s Great Morgan Hall, 2 detail photos of a lovely painting by #AliceNeel, a detail from a painting by #johnsingersargent, detail of a painting by #louisanquetin (love the way he’s capturing the light), two details from two different #Picasso paintings (love the 🐟), and finally a fall-front desk that I am coveting hard. It was made by an enslaved man named #WilliamHoward. There are just 5 other examples of his beautiful work known to exist in the world. #julielovesart

Had a great time at the opening of the Klimt/Schiele drawings exhibit at the #mfaboston tonight! Always interesting to look at sketches. I think they tell you so much about that artist’s thinking/process. This sketch is watercolor and charcoal from Schiele. #egonschiele

Currently in #NYC for 36 hours of art, food, and family. Charged through the @metmuseum this afternoon. Always overwhelming and delightful to visit this Mecca of art and craft and history and culture. My head is so full of ideas and patterns and thoughts. One of the exciting things about #themetropolitanmuseumofart is its epic size. It’s so ginormously vast that you can have a wildly different art experience every single time you visit. There simply aren’t enough hours in the day (or shoes comfortable enough) to see it all. But I’m going to try! 💪 #julielovesart PS: More #museumpics in my Instagram story!
