Oh what a marvelous beach! Have I ever wrote about the beach? I don't think so.
If Danny Boyle sais about The Beach (2000) that he didn't make the best job of it as a director as he could have done, we must try to understand why. He naturally blamed the high $55m budget and the massive crew he took from the west to Thailand. His clear preference for urban scenarios and critical themes are in contrast a group of "evil" hippies on paradise!
All in all, I'm prone to agree with Boyle, once Trainspotting (1996) and 127 Hours (2010) are superior films in all aspects… On the other hand, his mistakes and his experience shooting far away from home has set the stage for Slumdog Millionaire (2008) in India, mainly in terms of dealing with the locals. Slumdog won nothing more than 8 Academy Awards and was the best film of the year. So, a toast to The Beach, cause it has its value, and it's not a bad film!
