On January 28, 1986, the NASA shuttle orbiter mission STS-51-L and the tenth flight of Space Shuttle Challenger (OV-99) broke apart 73 seconds into its flight, killing all seven crew members, which consisted of five NASA astronauts and two payload specialists. The spacecraft disintegrated over the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Cape Canaveral, Florida, at 11:39 EST (16:39 UTC). Disintegration of the vehicle began after an O-ring seal in its right solid rocket booster (SRB) failed at liftoff. The O-ring was not designed to fly under unusually cold conditions as in this launch. Its failure caused a breach in the SRB joint it sealed, allowing pressurized burning gas from within the solid rocket motor to reach the outside and impinge upon the adjacent SRB aft field joint attachment hardware and external fuel tank. This led to the separation of the right-hand SRB's aft field joint attachment and the structural failure of the external tank. Aerodynamic forces broke up the orbiter.

At 4:38pm on January 28th, 1986, STS-51-L launched after multiple launch scrubs and delays. A crew consisting a several veteran astronauts, Commander Dick Scobee, Mission Specialists Ellison Onizuka, Judith Resnik, and Ron McNair were joined by rookie astronauts Pilot Michael Smith, Payload Specialists Greg Jarvis and Christa McAuliffe. The world was watching closely as McAuliffe was to be the first teacher in space, proving to the country that space flight was safe and routine, that almost anyone could fly. The program was coming under fire for not living up to the promises for flying multiple mission a month. The rush to get the crew up, despite warnings from Morton Thiokol (The company who made the SRBs) about the possibility of a failure of the rubber O-rings in the cold temperatures. Sadly, their fears were realized. During the few seconds of liftoff, black smoke could be seen coming from an area where the O-rings were, indicating a failure. But due to the sudden heat up of ignition, it sealed the leak. It would hold until Challenger encountered higher than anticipated wind sheer. This caused the fragile seal to break, allowing the the flames to leak out. 73 seconds into the flight, after burning thru the support strut and lower half of the External Fuel tank, the SRB broke loose and struck to top of the ET allowing the fuel to spill out. This caused the full break up of the shuttle and the rest of the flight stack. 32 years ago today at this time, January 28, 1986, the NASA shuttle Orbiter mission STS-51-L and the tenth flight of Space Shuttle Challenger (OV-99) broke apart 73 seconds into its flight, None of the crew survived. It consisted of five NASA astronauts Commander Francis R. Scobee, Pilot Michael J. Smith, Three Mission Specialists Ellison Onizuka, Judith Resnik, and Ronald McNair, and two payload specialist Gregory Jarvis, and Christa McAuliffe who was noted to be the first teacher assigned to space, with the newly formed program "Teachers in Space Program" (TISP). January 28, 1986. 32 years ago. The Space Shuttle Challenger explodes only 73 seconds after takeoff when the breach of a single O-ring on a solid rocket booster saw pressurized gas from the motor leak outside the fuel cell. This in turn caused an explosion which continued throughout the shuttle leading to full structural dismemberment. Aboard Challenger was Francis R. Scobee, Michael J. Smith, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka, Judith Resnik, Gregory Jarvis and most notably Christa McAuliffe (a teacher from Concord, New Hampshire). After hearing news of the tragedy, President Reagan postponed the State of the Union address and instead made an address from the Oval Office to comfort the nation that evening. Challenger. Watching history unfold in real time permanently etched this date into my mind. Every year I think about it. No tv, no radio, just an unusually cold and clear blue Florida sky. It was common to watch them going up and after the first few years it was still fun but seemed like no big deal until things went wrong. I definitely knew what happened wasn’t right. I returned to my 5th grade classroom when the principal came on the intercom and announced what I felt I already knew. I came home and remember watching my dad and his friend Mike staying up all night smoking joint after joint watching the news replay the event over and over.
