Port Angeles, WA recently lost a valued community member. Today, back in the US, his life is being celebrated. Here in Thailand we are honoring this great man as well, with traditional #JossPaper effigy ceremonies. #RIPJeff
This is Kurt Tong @kurttong77 on my third day of taking over @photoworks_uk account. For 6 days, I will be posting images from the six projects I have been working on since 2007, based around my own upbringing, familial relationships and Chinese Heritage.
In Case it Rains in Heaven (2009) is a catalogue of mass produced and widely available paper made objects, burnt as offerings for the dead. A one thousand year old practice that has been hugely transformed in the last two decades due to the rapid changes in consumerism culture in China. A monograph of the work was published by Kehrer Verlag in 2011.
After we prayed and offered Mama/Obachan her favorite meals, we burned joss money (Burning joss paper is a traditional Chinese-Taoist practice that sends money and materials goods to deceased relatives in the afterlife. It’s common to burn joss paper at funerals, on ancestor birthdays and during important holidays like the Qingming Festival and the Hungry Ghost Festival.) for her. She is uber rich now!😂😂😂🙏❤️ #carrythetradition#josspaper#obachan#ceremonials
Chinese New Year at the Shaolin academy. Burning the imitation money to send it to the ancestors. So... many kids makes for a wealthy afterlife. Genghis Khan must be a very rich ghost by now. Great time of year to be in China! #chinesenewyear#josspaper#china#shaolin
