SESSION 9 (2001)
While working in an abandoned mental hospital, an aspestos cleaning crew experiences the building’s haunted past.
How could you possibly go wrong with a movie set in a creepy old mental hospital? I’ve got the answer for ya! Session 9 is yet another movie I’ve put off for a long time and only recently watched. This one probably disappointed me the most. Where do I even begin? The acting is horrendous and even laughable at times, it looked like it was filmed with a flip phone, the script was annoying, and the characters were flat. When the creepy stuff was happening, I found myself not caring. Even at the end, I rolled my eyes. Maybe my expectations were too high, who knows. I was also extremely bored throughout the entire movie. There were a couple of moments that caught my interest but I grew more and more sleepy while watching it. So much promise, yet so little execution.
The imagery and sound design are the only two things going for Session 9. There are certain scenes that genuinely creeped me out. Unfortunately, they’re over pretty fast, but I give credit where credit’s due. I also found it interesting that the characters listened to the old recorded sessions in order to figure out what was going on. I will admit, that was smart. Everything else bored me.
I’ve seen worse. I’ve definitely seen better. Session 9 is yet another movie that could’ve been so much greater yet it went the dull route. I understand it’s difficult to make a movie with such a small budget, but we’ve seen it work with movies like Saw, Paranormal Activity, and The Blair Witch Project. Skip.
MY RATING: 4/10
