Fantasy Profile: Jorge Alfaro
Why he’s fantasy relevant: the catcher position is crap this year. You could always over pay for Sanchez or Posey or just grab whoever in the later rounds which is where Alfaro lands. Did a 12 man mock tonight and he wasn’t drafted, so you could use your last pick on Alfaro and hope he hits his ceiling and has a breakout year. Alfaro has the tools to help your team. If you pick him up with your last pick and he doesn’t pan out, there’s always the waiver wire and you didn’t really lose much with the pick.
Why you may want to pass: While his ceiling is high, his floor is also low. He could easily strike out 120+ times in 350 plate appearances while walking only 12-15 times. There’s also the Kapler factor. He’s a new school thinker. Would anyone be surprised by a catcher by committee approach? He may only play 3 times a week. That’s a problem in weekly lock leagues or leagues with small or no benches.
Verdict: There are better or similar options out there that you can take late in drafts. I never overpay for catchers or relief pitching. There are always players that emerge on the waiver wire. I’d pass on drafting Alfaro, but keep an eye on how he’s being used early in the season and watch his batted ball data & strike out to walk ratio. He may be a good stash candidate if you have a player go on the DL and you’re not crazy about your catcher.
