The Battle of Iwo Jima (19 February – 26 March 1945) was a major battle in which the United States Marine Corps landed on and eventually captured the island of Iwo Jima from the Japanese Imperial Army during World War II. The American invasion, designated Operation Detachment, had the goal of capturing the entire island, including the three Japanese-controlled airfields (including the South Field and the Central Field), to provide a staging area for attacks on the Japanese main islands. This five-week battle comprised some of the fiercest and bloodiest fighting of the War in the Pacific of World War II.

GySgt. John "Manila" Basilone(November 4, 1916 – February 19, 1945) Was a United States Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant who was killed in action during World War II. He received the Medal of Honor for heroism above and beyond the call of duty during the Battle of Guadal for extraordinary heroism and conspicuous gallantry in action against enemy Japanese forces, above and beyond the call of duty, while serving with the 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division in the Lunga Area, Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, on 24 and 25 October 1942. While the enemy was hammering at the Marines' defensive positions, GySgt. Basilone, in charge of 2 sections of heavy machine guns, fought valiantly to check the savage and determined assault. In a fierce frontal attack with the Japanese blasting his guns with grenades and mortar fire, one of GySgt. Basilone's sections, with its gun crews, was put out of action, leaving only 2 men able to carry on. Moving an extra gun into position, he placed it in action, then, under continual fire, repaired another and personally manned it, gallantly holding his line until replacements arrived. A little later, with ammunition critically low and the supply lines cut off, GySgt. Basilones, at great risk of his life and in the face of continued enemy attack, battled his way through hostile lines with urgently needed shells for his gunners, thereby contributing in large measure to the virtual annihilation of a Japanese regiment.

Happy Veteran's Day to a true hero. #johnbasilone #veteransday #ww2

In honor of Veteran's Day, even though it's actually tomorrow, I am posting about John Basilone, a Medal of Honor awarded Marine. He was a Marine during the Pacific Theatre where in Guadacanal during the battle for Henderson Field, his unit was under attack by over 3,000 Imperial Japanese soldiers. Commanding two sections of machine guns, him and another Marine were the last ones standing. Basilone continued to move another machine gun into position and continued firing. He also repaired and manned other machine guns, fighting off the enemy until replacements arrived. Through the fighting, ammunition became increasing low by enemies cutting off supply lines, Basilone fought through hostile ground to resupply his machine guns. When the last of it ran out, Basilone continued fighting, using his pistol and machete to annihilate the last of the remaining opposing forces. When he reenlisted into the Marine Corps, he met his future wife, Lena Mae Riggi, a Sergeant in the Marine Corps Women's Reserve. Later on after his marriage, he was sent to Iwo Jima where he cleared paths for tanks, destroyed steong points and garrisons until he was hit by small arms fire where he was hit in the right groin, the neck, and nearly taking off his arm. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery . He has also had a monument made for him in his hometown of Raritan, New Jersey. He later potrayed by @jonseda in the show "The Pacific".
