SWMRS - Berkeley's On Fire (2018)
I only started this blog two weeks ago and even though the posts are record-based, as opposed to artist-based, I did want to refrain from posting about the same artist within a certain number of posts. So far I have managed to avoid that... Until now! I posted about SWMRS debut album 'Drive North' a couple of days ago, but today they have dropped this fist-pounding anthem that, if they were British, I am sure would be soon adopted by a football team for a striker banging goals in left, right and centre. 'Berkely's On Fire' starts with some guitar harmonics that sound almost reggae-like, before the chunky riff of guitars and drums come in, preluding the voice of Cole Becker, who sets the scene with lyrics about a riot on the streets of the band's hometown. The vocal delivery has shades of Weezer's Rivers Cuomo, specifically from the 'Red Album' song 'Troublemaker'- attitude and snottiness. This soon builds into a chorus that The Clash themselves would be proud of. Anthemic and loud, you can soon see yourself at a festival with a can of red stripe in one hand and a fist made of the other, punching the air and soaking those around you as SWMRS rightly tell you to be careful of the news you consume, break a few rules if it's in the name of something wholly beneficial and a reminder I cannot believe is necessary in this day and age, 'freedom of speech' doesn't mean 'freedom to talk out of your arse'. I am WELL excited for this album now!
