“I hope that you will listen, but not with the memory of what you already know; and this is very difficult to do. You listen to something, and your mind immediately reacts with its knowledge, its conclusions, its opinions, its past memories. It listens, inquiring for a future understanding.

Just observe yourself, how you are listening, and you will see that this is what is taking place. Either you are listening with a conclusion, with knowledge, with certain memories, experiences, or you want an answer, and you are impatient. You want to know what it is all about, what life is all about, the extraordinary complexity of life. You are not actually listening at all.

You can only listen when the mind is quiet, when the mind doesn't react immediately, when there is an interval between your reaction and what is being said. Then, in that interval there is a quietness, there is a silence in which alone there is a comprehension which is not intellectual understanding.

If there is a gap between what is said and your own reaction to what is said, in that interval, whether you prolong it indefinitely, for a long period or for a few seconds - in that interval, if you observe, there comes clarity. It is the interval that is the new brain. The immediate reaction is the old brain, and the old brain functions in its own traditional, accepted, reactionary, animalistic sense.

When there is an abeyance of that, when the reaction is suspended, when there is an interval, then you will find that the new brain acts, and it is only the new brain that can understand, not the old brain” ― #JidduKrishnamurti

The First Ripple of Love Has to Be Around Yourself "The healthy love of oneself is a great religious value. The person who does not love himself will not be able to love anybody else, ever. The first ripple of love has to rise in your heart. If it has not risen for yourself it cannot rise for anybody else, because everybody else is farther away from you. "It is like throwing a stone in the silent lake – the first ripples will arise around the stone and then they will go on spreading to the further shores. The first ripple of love has to be around yourself. One has to love one's body, one has to love one's soul, one has to love one's totality. "And this is natural; otherwise you would not be able to survive at all. And it is beautiful because it beautifies you. The person who loves himself becomes graceful, elegant. The person who loves himself is bound to become more silent, more meditative more prayerful than the person who does not love himself. "If you don't love your house you will not clean it; if you don't love your house you will not paint it; if you don't love you will not surround it with a beautiful garden with a lotus pond. If you love yourself you will create a garden around yourself. You will try to grow your potential, you will try to bring out all that is in you to be expressed. If you love, you will go on showering yourself, you will go on nourishing yourself. "And if you love yourself you will be surprised: others will love you. Nobody loves a person who does not love himself. If you cannot even love yourself, who else is going to take the trouble? And the person who does not love himself cannot remain neutral. Remember, in life there is no neutrality." Osho, The Secret, Talk  #18

✺ “Is there a way of seeing which has no relationship to knowledge? I say that there is. The next question is: as the brain is full of knowledge, how can such a brain understand this statement? The brain cannot answer. It is used to conflict, it is habituated to it, and you are putting a new question to it. So the brain is in revolt.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I say: don’t be in revolt; listen. Try to listen without the movement of thought, which means to see something without naming. Find the out what the state of the brain is when it has not used the word in seeing.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I realize my life is conflict. Nobody has to point that out; it is so. You come along and tell me that this whole conflict of living can be ended immediately. I don’t believe you. I feel it can never happen. I say: look, I will show it to you step by step. Listen; take time. Time in the sense of having patience, but actually patience is not of time; impatience is time.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I tell you that there is an ending to conflict and the brain resists. I tell you to let it resist, but please keep on listening. Don’t bring in more resistance. To watch your resistance and keep moving—that is patience. Don’t react but listen to the fact that your brain is a network of words and that you cannot see anything new if you are all the time seeing through words. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So, can you look at something, anything—a flower, the sky, a cloud—without a single word? Don’t name it, just look. What happens to the brain when it looks that way? Watch it in yourself. It is in a state of shock; it is staggering. So have patience. Watch it staggering—that is patience. See the brain staggering and be with it. As you watch it, the brain quiets down. Then look with that quiet brain at things; that is learning.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Has it happened? It would mean you have wiped away the whole self. I wonder if you see this. Because the self is knowledge. If it has not happened, let us begin again.”

"The following day there was the first private discussion at Pupul Jayakar’s house. About fifteen people attended. It was asked what an individual can do in the face of the disintegration of society. Krishnamurti took it up, saying that change of each individual by another is impossible; change by evolution, by social action hadn’t done it and implies time. He then asked if there were something totally different. He made the distinction between the individual and the human being, i.e., the individual has his own separate conditioning, but the human being has the conditioning of the whole human consciousness. He posed the question and then veered back to stressing the futility of other ways. Often in discussions he made a large step forward, giving a hint, a glimpse, and then someone would say, “But, Krishnaji, we don’t see that.” Then there would be a catalogue of all our shortcomings, and so it was that day." – Excerpt from "In the Presence of Krishnamurti: Mary’s Unfinished Book". "I had asked Krishnamurti if I could have another interview, and it took place on the following day. He asked if I would prefer his healing treatment before speaking or afterward. I said afterward and apparently had chosen rightly as he nodded and motioned me to a chair. I felt very relaxed in this interview in contrast to previous ones. I said I wanted to talk to him about relationship, specifically human ones and questioned whether, in some cases where there is very little contact, there was in fact any relationship at all. He asked if I could be more specific and give an example. I spoke of a child about whom I was concerned but seldom saw, and described the circumstances. He asked a few questions and said in effect that since there was little I could do to alter things, that no, I had no relationship. But where there is communication there can be a continuing relation. We talked of relationship in marriage, which he said was infinitely more complicated, and finally he said that there is relationship only when you have no image of the other person. Then there is direct and real relationship. As long as there is an image, you are trying to approximate something to fit an idea and hence unreality and conflict." – Excerpt from "In the Presence of Krishnamurti: Mary’s Unfinished Book". "On November twenty-second Krishnamurti gave his first public talk in a large hall with rugs on the floor on which all sat—students and adults. He spoke of nationalism, religious sects, and war—the dividers of humankind, destroyers of order and peace. What was our response to this? A question from the audience asked, “What is the use to talk of truth?” He said you cannot use it; it serves no utility. It is like the wind; you cannot catch it and hold it in your hand. He asked, “How is a human being who has listened for forty years with a dry heart, without a tear in his eye, who sees all this and does not do a thing, whose heart is broken up, whose heart is empty, whose mind is full of words and theories, full of himself—how is he to make his heart alive again? That is the real question.” – Excerpt from "In the Presence of Krishnamurti: Mary’s Unfinished Book". Available now: shfpublications.com/marys-unfinished-book #jiddukrishnamurti #krishnamurti

"On October twenty-sixth, I flew to Rome, where a friend met me and drove me to my hotel. That afternoon I went to the house on the outskirts of Rome where Krishnamurti and Alain were staying with Signora Scaravelli. We talked. Alain made tea, and at 5:00 about thirty people came for the last of three discussions with this group. Krishnamurti spoke of the unconscious and how it can be seen totally but only after much self-knowledge and the discipline that comes without motive and without the action of pleasure. Pleasure is usually the seed of the unconscious.

The following day at lunch, Krishnamurti again plied me with questions about the United States, California in particular, and asked about yesterday’s discussion. Did it sound to me like sanity or insanity? What did I think it would mean to a US college audience? Would it have any meaning? I wondered at the seeing of the unconscious he had described in contrast to the view of it that was prevalent in psychoanalysis. He asked again what the United States would understand of that and nodded when I suggested it might depend on whether they could be brought past trying to relate what he said to fit into the pigeonholes already in their minds." – Excerpt from "In the Presence of Krishnamurti: Mary’s Unfinished Book". Chapter 1 "This is something I never planned to write. Then, one day, in the spring of 1972, Krishnamurti asked me to put down notes each day on “what it was like to be with the man from Madanapalle,” and later, through the years, he repeated this instruction. I had kept, on and off since first going to India in 1965, a record of events and things he had said, and this I continued as long as he lived. Afterward, for a time, to write about him seemed an overwhelming task; the extraordinary privilege I had in being with him did not seem mine to use in any way, and I was reluctant to bring myself into any account, but slowly I began to see that the same privilege was not mine to keep; that the history of lives or events is a mosaic of the testimony of witnesses or participants in happenings that have filtered down through time. And there is also the compelling fact that he asked me to write.

A further clue came on a later day when a guest at the lunch table asked me how I had met Krishnamurti. I described how it had come about, and Krishnaji, sitting across the table but not part of the conversation, suddenly said: “That’s where you start your story.” So I do."
