SILLY SEASON: Ah yes, the most wonderful time of the year: NASCAR Silly Season! With the uprise of the NASCAR Youth Movement to the Cup Series and the rumors/confirmations of open rides in the Cup Series, this Silly Season could play out very different from past years, including two Xfinity Series Stars: Cole Custer and Christopher Bell.
Cole Custer: Custer has been driving for SHR in the Xfinity Series since 2017 with 1 career win at Homestead this year. With two starts in Rick Ware's 51 Cup car, Custer's best finish came 25th at Las Vegas. News broke out last week that Kurt Busch would no longer be racing for SHR in 2019, which leaves an open door in the #41 car. Rumors has floated around about Custer's Cup move, but nothing confirmed. However, SHR's open seat may be his best bet in inking a Cup contract for 2019.
Christopher Bell: It is no doubt that Bell has been phenomenal in his rookie season of the Xfinity Series and is seen as the championship favorite. However, JGR announced that Bell would, again, contend for the Xfinity Series title in 2019, even when Bell commented that he would like to save time and race in the Cup Series in 2019. The majority of the reason Bell will most likely not be racing in the Cup series comes from there being no open rides in the Toyota camp; with no open slots at JGR and Furniture Row struggling to entirely fund one car. Gibbs sees talent in Bell, but doesn't want to risk losing him to another Cup team. At this point, it appears that Bell will be waiting till 2019 for his Cup rookie stripes.
