Jerk recoveries are a great exercise to employ in a weightlifters programming with a number of benefits: ☑️improve consistency & positioning of the split ☑️improve consistency in the recovery ☑️help the athlete actively push under the bar to receive ☑️develop confidence as loads in excess of the athletes max jerk can be utilised (commonly loads of 85-110% are utilised) ☑️strengthen the overhead position ☑️help the athlete maintain a balanced position of the bar overhead in the recovery . We would normally utilise these at the end of toward the end of a session, obviously volume/intensity & frequency parameters need to be considered relevant to the individual . My training schedule for the last three days completely fell apart and so when I stepped into the gym tonight after 1 a.m., I felt awful and discouraged. .
But I had to do the essentials that I missed out on before I passed out and the most important for me was deadlifts. .
315lb rpe5. 365lb rpe7. 410lb failed. My thumbs felt as though they were going to tear and I gave up far too soon. .
My deadlift as always been neglected as I truly don't care for it. But to be a complete powerlifter I not only need to train in it, I need to become efficient in the deadlift. .
My sumo deadlift is an easy 405lb for reps, my most recent (september) max for hook grip conventional was 375lb, and my most recent (october) max for a mixed grip deadlift was a fasted 395lb. .
I am about to enter my second year of powerlifting, and I need to focus on more consistent training to bring up these numbers. Certainly the deadlift needs work but there is always room for improvement elsewhere. .

As the year draws to a close it’s natural to recap over your goals and successes, but what if you didn’t achieve your goals this year? I didn’t..in fact for the second year in a row I haven’t achieved my overarching goal of qualifying for the IWF Masters Worlds Weightlifting Championship. Last year I bombed (missed all lifts) on the Snatch and this year two weeks before my qualifier competition I herniated two discs in my back. I’ve spent the last 8 months rehabbing that injury and it cost me nearly all progress - in both WL and CrossFit. So am I a failure? Two years of not hitting my goal? Maybe I’m just not good enough? You know it’s natural to feel awful and crap and everything else when you don’t hit your goals but it’s not your goals that define you rather it’s how you react to achieving - or not achieving them - that really matters. I spoke with my WL coach about next years goal..guess what it is...WORLDS. Because giving up is not an option, because failure is part of the process and because we know I can do it.
