NERDY NEWS UPDATE: [CONTENT WARNING: SPOILERS]
American network CBS had been preparing for the airing of Season 34, Episode 6 ‘What Happened on Exile, Stays on Exile’ of ‘Survivor’ for several months.
During the episode’s climax, in which a contestant is voted out through a tribal council, realtor Jeff Varner revealed that his fellow contestant, asset manager Ezekiel ‘Zeke’ Smith, is transgender. Relating to deceptive tactics implemented to win the one million-dollar prize, Varner turned to Smith and asked, ‘Why haven’t you told anyone you’re transgender?’ Smith, who had previously participated in Season 33 - titled ‘Survivor: Millennials vs. Gen X’ - sat in silence as fellow contestants condemned Varner for raising something personal and irrelevant to the overall game in an attempt to save himself from elimination.
Host and executive producer Jeff Probst, who had known of Smith’s gender identity from the previous season’s casting, said, ‘I know from talking to Zeke a lot before the show that he was fully prepared with the fact that it might come out. And he said, “I will handle that as I need to, if it does.”’ Of Varner’s decision to out a fellow member of the LGBTIQA+ community, Probst said that he ‘was as shocked as anybody else.’ According to Probst, Varner had not indicated to a producer that he was going to bring the issue up during the vote.
Varner, who was eliminated at the end of the episode without a vote, has since apologised profusely for his lack of judgement. ‘Survivor: Game Changers’, Episode 6 ‘What Happened on Exile, Stays on Exile’ is available to view online via 9Now until Thursday, 11 May 2017.
