Quick note before my thoughts. This will be my list of 10 guitarists. If you don’t know, I’ve studied guitar for a good 20 years or so and studied jazz guitar in college. Don’t expect you SRV or Hendrix in this list, even though I love them.
For my first guitarist the crowd went: who? Philip Catherine. He is a Belgian jazz guitarist. I randomly picked up an NHOP (one of the great jazz bassists) album at Best Buy because the cover looked stupid. It ended up being this fusion guitarist named Phillip Catherine on the album and my brain sort of exploded. I’ve never heard this album and didn’t need to because I’m familiar with his playing and composition style. This is a compilation of his first two European albums. It’s very heavy 70s fusion. I love it. The man is a technician but is a lot more than just a guitarist playing a steady stream of 16th or 32nd notes. By the way, the album is called Nairam which is what the cover says...it’s hard to read. The whole album is beautiful. Finding his albums in the US is so weird. I learned that he’s connected to the band Focus. You know, they have that hit Hocus Pocus.
