Our professor in Wagner lesson today: "sometimes you wanna spice up your piece with some new melody lines for the strings/ woodwinds, and then you come up with a new Line and so on. But remember: all the lines can't have Christmas Eve🎄 at the same time. One line has to be boring too." #classicalcomposers #jazzcomposers #arranging #coffeebreak #fika

Born this day: August 16th, 1888; Armand John 'AJ' Piron; Band Leader, Volinist & Composer. In 1915 Piron & Clarence Williams formed 'The Piron & Williams Publishing Company. In Nat Shapiro & Nat Hentoff's "Hear me Talkin' to Ya" first published in 1955, Clarence recalls; 'you might say I was the first black music publisher in New Orleans, and I went into partnership with A J Piron. Piron at that time, was what you might call the Paul Whiteman of New Orleans, his having one of the best orchastras in the city, playin' at the best hotels. Piron was important to me because he could write songs down for me'. One of those songs was' I wish I could Shimmy like my Sister Kate' published in 1915 , their first & biggest hit. With a residency at the Spanish Fort Amusement Park at Fort St John, and other exclusive venues ( including the New Orleans Country Club) the 1915 band (pic above) feat: Peter Bowgage (far left, Trumpet) & Louis 'old man' Cotrelle, on drums, who is also credited with teaching many of the early jazz drummers, and clerinetist Lorenzo Tio jnr, Piron is standing by the piano. In 1923 the band moved to New York, landing the residency at the Roseland Ballroom, whilst also being amongst the first black artist's to record for major lables (Victor in 1923, Okeh and Columbia). This band was a big influance on New York musicians at that time, however some members where unhappy in the city and following a vote Piron reluctantly returnd to New Orleans in 1924. Back in the city the band played at Tranchina's Restaurant and on both the 'Capital' & 'President' steamships during the 1930's. A J Piron passed on February 17th 1943, aged 54, a pioneer of jazz, who was involved from it's inception and departed at posibly the hight of its popularity.#jazz #jazzviolin #neworleansjszz #neworleans #jazzandblues #downbeat #columbiarecords #jazzmusicians #victorrecords #okehrecords #jazzcomposers #jazzandbluestoday

I'm actually digging how the sound peeks and distorts here :) reminds me of the tones of batà drums in a concrete room when they're playing on the skins just loud enough.

Another day, another improv at the beast, another fun time. This is actually how i compose: i record all of the things i play, i listen back, and if i like it, transcribe it, arrange it and orchestrate it. Anyone can do it 😁😁 but it's a 💩

How I (Liberté-Anne) miss New York! The vibe is always up, and it's always "anything is possible!" But you gotta hang. New York's a bitch and I love it. She puts you right back in your place. Can't wait to be back, who knows when... But the band is still there and has a show Sep. 17 @rockwoodmusichall so we're good 😁😁💜

Honoured to be an ISJAC SONIC Award Winner for my composition "True North". It was a blast playing the piece with Chris Baker and members of Chuck Owen's Jazz Surge. #ashleysummerstruenorth #isjac #jazznerdsymposium #jazzcomposers #earsandeyesrecords #chicagojazz

I can't wait to share this music 🎶 with you all! ✨✨✨✨ #factor #tomleesteinway

Composers are the essence of "Creativity." Without composers, the world would be deprived of the music that enriches all our lives. For me and for many of my peers, "JAZZ MUSIC" is the music that ignites our creative expression. ORIGINAL MUSIC is an art form to be treasured forever! Composers fuel the flame of CREATIVE MUSICAL EXPRESSION! Creating my own music was the reason I pursued a musical career and that's why I've continued composing since I was in the 7th grade. Look for my songbook this coming summer. #composers #jazz #jazzcomposers #jazzcomposersworkshop #smoothjazz #vibes #vibraphone #teambalter #ludwigmusser #smoothjazzfestivals #smoothjazzmusic

Black History Day 75: In 1930, #CabCalloway got a gig at Harlem's famed Cotton Club and became a regular performer at the popular nightclub. Calloway hit the big time with "Minnie the Moocher" in 1931. This number one song sold more than one million copies. Calloway was one of the most successful performers of the era. During the 1930s and 1940s, he appeared in such films as The Big Broadcast, The Singing Kid, and Stormy Weather. In addition to music, Calloway influenced the public with books such as 1944's The New Cab Calloway's Hepster's Dictionary: Language of Jive. Beginning in 1952, he spent two years in the cast of a revival of the musical Porgy and Bess. In that show, he portrayed Sportin' Life, a character Calloway himself had reportedly inspired George Gershwin to create. Calloway took other onstage roles over the years, including the male lead in a 1967 production of Hello Dolly!, which had an all-black cast. Calloway introduced himself to new fans by appearing on Sesame Street and in Janet Jackson's 1990 music video for "Alright," and shared his life story in an autobiography, Of Minnie the Moocher and Me published in 1976. In 1993, President Bill Clinton presented Calloway with a #NationalMedaloftheArts. He died on November 18, 1994, at the age of 86.
