The tale of Masataka Taketsuru's life is of the same fabric legends are made of. Sent in 1918 as young apprentice to Scotland by his Japanese employers to crack the secrets of whisky, he not only came back with that knowledge but also with Rita Taketsuru (nee Cowan), who went on playing a decisive role in the development of the Japanese Whisky industry. Thanks to her connection to Japanese high society, Masataka was able to finance the company that is now known as Nikka Whisky.This blend of malts is reputedly from the two Nikka distilleries, Yoichi and Miyagikyo.

Suntory Imperial Whisky

The “Imperial” blend was often labeled a whisky of “superior quality”, and at times was advertised with the slogan “suitable enough for an emperor”, quite relevant given the brand naming. This whisky, derived from distilling techniques around the time of 1964 (Tokyo Olympics), is said to contain only the best of the best malt from the Yamazaki distillery. Once described as Suntory’s masterpiece from their portfolio at the time, this blend was apparently in production for at least 40 years, with various bottle shapes and volumes during this period. The picture above appears to be the “Imperial” blend from the 1980’s (ABV43%), which the decanter, and quite a beautiful one at that, is hand crafted Kagami crystal. I have come across this so called extravagant blend on a few occasions, it generally retails in most mom & pop stores between 9,000 to 11,000 yen (although I did have the opportunity to pick it up cheaper), expensive really, and at a price most likely still from the late 80’s to early 90’s. It can be sourced much cheaper at auction on the Internet. Rumor has it that the Kagami crystal decanter arguably retains the most value of the blend, while the whisky within holds the remaining, that plus a few thousand yen could be attributed to the name “Imperial” itself. Regardless, this blend fascinates me (I must admit that it does have a lot to do with the decanter), something I hope to consume sooner or later if I can find it at a much more reasonable price, but this amongst the many treasure troves I have come across must wait its turn. The “Imperial” appears to have ceased production around the time of the millennium.

The Taketsuru range are labeled as “pure malts”, of which Nikka’s two malt whisky distilleries, Yoichi produces rich, peaty and masculine malt and Miyagikyo soft and feminine mixed on the whisky gving it an elegance with complexity. This special 25 Year Old is a very rare expression from the Taketsuru range, made with malts aged for at least 25 years from the mentioned two distilleries. It was launched in Japan only in the year 2012, in very limited quantities.

Nose: Strong floral aromas, tropical fruits, vanilla scents, peaty

Palate: Silky smooth, plums, juicy oranges, sweet spice

Finish: Complex, minty, and the soft fruitiness lingers

Yamazaki Heavily Peated 2013
A few days ago, Suntory announced the release of the Yamazaki Heavily Peated 2013 edition. It will be a Japan-only release, and will go on sale on April 23rd. Bottled at 48% abv,a mere 3,500 bottles will be available and if the recent Hakushu Sherry Cask experience is anything to go by, it won't be around for very long.

I happened to be at the distillery - doing research for a forthcoming book - when the imminent release of this Heavily Peated was announced and fans of Yamazaki will be happy to know Suntory is in the process of adding 4 more stills to the site there. These will be placed in a different building, seeing as there's no more room in the current stillhouse (which already holds 6 pairs of stills). In addition, a new warehouse is under construction at their Ohmi site in Shiga prefecture, where the bulk of Suntory's malt and practically all of its grain whisky is matured. It seems like things are going really well for Suntory and, indeed, for whisky in Japan in general. It's a big gamble, of course, since decisions made now will only prove valid ten years down the line, but the fact that the people at Suntory are confident enough to make these commitments show how vibrant the whisky scene is at the moment.

Suntory "Wa-Kyo"
It's been six years since the Japanese department stores Shinanoya didn't work with Suntory for an exclusive whisky bottling. The "Wa-Kyo" is therefore an ultra expected new limited edition that Shinanoya had "officially" released this weekend. "Officially" because in reality the 539 bottles have all been pre-ordered and are unfortunately no longer available for sale as stated in the Shinanoya's website. It seems that most of the happy future owners of this exclusive Japanese whisky had the opportunity to reserve their bottle at the Suntory's stand during Chichibu Whisky Matsuri festival 2015.

As usual a few secrets about the composition were unveiled. It would be a blended work around old Mizunara casks from Yamazaki distillery including a 1984 vintage, bottled at 43% and sold only in Japan.

The "Wa-Kyo" was created by the Suntory's Chief Blender Shinji Fukuyo, who also created some of the last releases such as the famous Yamazaki Cask Collection, the Yamazaki 1984, the Distiller's Reserve, the Hakushu Bourbon Barrel and Heavily Peated, and much more.. And to pay tribute to his work, Shinanoya decided to call a famous Japanese calligrapher Master Shoshu in order to design the bottle label.

Unfortunately, we will never have a chance to taste this delicious limited edition strongly marked by the wood of the Japanese Mizunara oak.

To comfort us, Shinji Fukuyo describes his "Wa-Kyo" as soft, sweet and intensely spicy, with notes of malt, grain and honey. Also very marked by the Mizunara wood with spicy notes of incense and cinnamon, and will leave you with aromas of pepper in its long and smooth finish.

Nikka Taketsuru 35 YO
43% abv
Nose: Elegant yet very expressive. Plush and exotic. Ripe stone fruits, red berries, cinnamon, licorice, sweet orange, old leather chairs, ginger, tinned mango, cantaloupe (a first for me in a whisky), old cognac, faint hint of tar. I really don't find any woodyness on the nose.
Palate: Sweet red grape/berries, vanilla, pipe tobacco, canteloupe, strawberry, creme caramel, glazed orange slices, old cognac and a little salt. Thirty-five years in oak barrels starts to make an impact, adding a drying element but it certainly isn't much of a bother.
Finish: Not long but a lovely balance between fruit, wood, spice, leather and pipe tobacco. This is very different to the 3 others in the Taketsuru range. Some truelly exotic elements add to a wonderful whisky experience. Worth it just for the exquisite nose. Tasting was done from a single dram which I don't normally post, but I was able to spend around half an hour of quiet time with the bottle.

Yamazakura Sherry Wood Finish
A blended whisky from Japan's Yamazakura range, which is brought to market by Japanese company Sasanokawa Shuzo. The name itself a portmanteau of two Japanese terms 'Yama' means 'mountain' and 'Sakura' means cherry tree. If you think about it, a portmanteau is kind of like a blend but with words, so this name is rather apt for a Japanese blended whisky.

In 2012 Yamazaki decided to release de-construct their Japanese Single Malt Whisky so you can appreciate the various types of casks used to make their award-winning malt. Yamazakura Sherry Wood Finish 15 yrs

Established since 1765, Sasanokawa Shuzo is one of many "ji-whisky" producers in Japan ---think micro-distillery with an established sake and shochu portfolio making whisky on the side. They produce only a handful of whisky expressions under the Yamazakura brand, and a majority of them, like this one, never go abroad. This Pure Malt benefits from double-barreling, initially maturing for 15 years in oak, before resting in tanks, and then finishing in casks previously used to age sherry. Available at cask strength (a hefty 59% ABV), without chill-filtering or added color, only 20 bottlings of this were ever released for the Japanese market.

Suntory ‘Wa-Kyo’ Blended Whisky for Shinanoya

Towards the end of last year, we unveiled that the good folk at Shinanoya were about to release an extraordinary blended whisky crafted by Suntory chief blender Shinji Fukuyo. It’s been 6 years since Shinanoya last released a Suntory exclusive bottling, so it’s a bit of an understatement to say that this is an eagerly anticipated release. The blend is composed around malt matured in mizunara casks and it’s called “Wa-Kyo” (which roughly translates as ‘Japanese harmony/resonance’). “Wa-Kyo” will officially go on sale this weekend, and is expected to sell out instantly. This partly has to do with a fact that a large part of the outturn (which is 530 bottles, bottled at 43%abv) has been reserved by pre-orders. (People attending the Chichibu Whisky Matsuri last weekend had the chance to sign up in advance for a bottle… and since 1,400 people flocked to the festival, it’s easy to understand why there would be very few bottles left.).The competition of fellow Japanese-whisky aficionados will be!

Suntory Whisky Keizo Saji Ceramic Bottle
Suntory is the oldest whisky making company in Japan. Its origins stretch back to a small shop, started in 1899 by Torii Shinjiro, which specialized in selling imported wines. Today, it is the country’s largest and most recognizable producer of quality whisky.
