THE ALJAMEA TUS SAIFIYAH NAIROBI AFRICA.
The Al Jamea tus Saifiyah campus in Kenya is one of three worldwide campuses of the Dawoodi Bohra sect of the Islamic faith devoted exclusively to a faith-based education and pedagogy. The fourteen-acre master plan is part of a larger existing campus in exurban Nairobi. Entered through a sacred gateway, the campus is centered on a plaza surrounded by the mosque, assembly hall, dining hall and library. Classroom buildings separated by gender are located on either side of the plaza and adjacent to gender-specific residence halls. Other facilities include a building for the study of the Quran, an auditorium, a health center and various sports facilities.
The master plan is conceived as an intricate sequence of quads and courts, each open to the sky and embodying sacred Bohra tenets through plant choices, water bodies and specific landscape elements. The architecture of the campus emerges out of a deep study of traditional Bohra architecture, which has roots in Cairo and the African and South Asian diaspora.
