The mystic of 'Corryong' surrounded by the dramatic mountain peaks of both the Kosciuszko National Park + the Snowy Mountains. Famous for the real home of ‘Man From Snowy River’, Jack Riley. It is commonly agreed that A.B. ‘Banjo’ Paterson’s epic ballad ‘Man From Snowy River' (1890) was written about Riley’s exploits as an exceptionally gifted mountain rider, horse-breaker, bushman and tracker of wild horses. While working as the manager of the Tom Groggin cattle station in the Upper Murray Valley he undertook the hair raising and dangerous ride which lies at the centre of Paterson's poem. Paterson had met Riley while on a camping trip in the area and was inspired by his tales of adventure. Jack Riley’s unpretentious grave can today be seen at Corryong’s hillside cemetery.
.
The area’s first cattle station was set up in 1838 and today 10,000 head of cattle pass through the local saleyards annually. Paul Edmund Strzelecki explored the region in 1840 on his way to Gippsland.
.
A township began to form when the high country was opened up for selection in the 1860s. In 1879 the town was surveyed and in 1882 the first land sale was made.
.
The name ‘Corryong’ was adapted from ‘cooyong’, the Aboriginal word for bandicoot.
