Today is #WorldTurtleDay and we found one of the gopher tortoises here at White Oak out “shellebrating” by enjoying a midday snack. Gopher tortoises and named such because they dig burrows to live in. They are the largest tortoise in the U.S. east of the Mississippi River, and unfortunately, they are threatened within their ranges. It is illegal to own, harass or injure a gopher tortoise. And did you know that, historically, gopher tortoises were consumed as food by local residents? But that is now illegal as well. ⠀
Worldwide, there are 365 known species of turtles, tortoises and terrapins, all members of the scientific order Testudines. Some are highly endangered. There are many reasons for this, including habitat loss, hunting for food (including their eggs) and the illegal pet trade. It is also believed in some countries that a turtle’s plastron (the bottom shell) has medicinal value. ⠀
Turtles have been on our planet for 220 million years. Let’s keep them here another 220 million. According to the @tortoiserescue , here are some things you can do to protect tortoises.⠀
• Never buy a turtle or tortoise from a pet shop as it increases demand from the wild.⠀
• Never remove turtles or tortoises from the wild unless they are sick or injured.⠀
• If a tortoise is crossing a busy street, pick it up and send it in the same direction it was going – if you try to make it go back, it will turn right around again. ⠀
• Report the sale of any turtle or tortoise of any kind less than four inches. This is illegal throughout the U.S.⠀
• Report the cruelty or illegal sales of turtles and tortoises to your local animal control shelter. ⠀
• Write letters to legislators asking them to keep sensitive habitat preserved, whether on land at sea.⠀

We would like to say a huge thank you to Caisse Financial Group for the generous $1000 gift through the Green Fund! These funds will be used to purchase shrubs, perennials and grasses native to Manitoba in the nature playground! Thank you for partnering with us!

‘Ungulate’ is a word to describe any mammal with a hoof or modified toenail. White Oak has several ungulates, and many of them are endangered. As a matter of fact, one of the species here is considered Extinct in the Wild, but there are populations still in existence in conservation breeding programs around the world. ⠀
Today we highlight those endangered ungulates as we prepare for #EndangeredSpeciesDay2018. Raising awareness of these magnificent and imperiled species may help to prevent them from also becoming Extinct in the Wild. In order of appearance: Pere David's deer (Extinct in the Wild), Somali wild ass (Critically Endangered), eastern bongo (Critically Endangered), dama gazelle (Critically Endangered), southern black rhino (Critically Endangered), Nile lechwe (Endangered), slender-horned gazelle (Endangered), Grevy's zebra (Endangered), okapi (Endangered) #savingspecies #ultimateungulates #EndangeredSpecies #ittakesallofus #extinctionisforever

Around 20% of Alaskan kids are living in food insecure homes. SNAP works to keep them healthy so they can focus on their education. @foodbankofalaska

Path to Independence will give Anchorage families and adults the leg up they need to get back on their feet and work towards financial stability. @catholicsocialservicesalaska shared a wonderful video explaining how: http://bit.ly/2L4UpoW

Often we find ourselves enjoying political candidates event at their expense. Did you donate, ask to volunteer for their campaign or even think how you can help on Election Day? It will take all of us to make a real change that only some of us want to actually do the work.

Let's keep kids, adults, and families healthy so they can succeed in school, at work, and in life.

A truly stunning photograph of one of White Oak's White rhinos. White Oak is one of member facilities and is working hard to conserve rhinos, working ex situ and supporting in situ efforts.
Regrann from @whiteoakconservation - Happy #CincodeRhino! Today is a day to celebrate one of the coolest creatures on the planet. And as you enjoy the other holiday that falls on the 5th of May, don't forget to do your part to support rhino conservation so that we will always have a reason to celebrate Cinco de Rhino. #saverhinos #rhinoconservation #teamrhino #ittakesallofus #onlyrhinosneedtheirhorns - #regrann
