One day, my kids(well, my older ones) and I were conversing about the shuttle service in our church.
They are provided for those that had their cars in the park or far from the main church building. The distance isn't that far. Many people (including us,) usually walk to their cars but these shuttles are provided for those that needed them or just wanted to chill. Yeah, my church is cool like that.
Anyways, so our kids remembered one time we did take one of the shuttles and thought we paid for it. I told them it was free and our daughter went, "Free, you mean it's free. Not even a dollar?" "Yes", I said. Then I realised what she said, and I said, "Not even a Naira" She said, "oh yeah. Not even a Naira"(She knows her momma.Lol). I knew it was just an expression and most of the children's programmes we watch are made in The States so they are bound to 'catch' their 'lingua' but I also want them to 'appreciate' where they are from.
I'm aware that the Naira to the Dollar is in shambles.I'm aware. However, when they ask why Nigeria is how it is and other countries are better. I tell them the reason - 'all of us' but I add Nigeria was great and can/will be great again. I tell them the things we can and need to do to make us great again.
I tell them these things because maybe, just maybe, it would give them hope and 'ignite' something in them to act towards rebuilding their country.
I'd rather paint a picture of hope rather than of hopelessness and 'glorifying' other countries and 'helping' them get better. I'd rather give hope where there is no hope because the truth is, it starts with hope and we can always hope.
