Each moment we are faced with a choice with how we are going to act. Will we choose to do what gives us immediate gratification? Or will we delay the gratification and make choices that are in alignment with our bigger goals?
The more we can mindfully delay gratification, the more we will reach and exceed our goals.
Our food choices are the obvious example:
Do we choose to eat the foods that give us that momentary pleasure but ultimately make us feel lousy, or do we not eat that crap? Forsaking the immediate gratification for the long term rewards of good health and feeling great inside and out?
Do we delay the gratification of binge watching that Netflix series and instead listen to podcasts that are enriching and help us instill new, higher habits?
Do we delay the gratification of getting all of the latest “stuff” we want and instead enjoy the long term gratification of financial stability?
You see where we are going with this — the more we can delay gratification the more we enjoy the really good things life has to offer.
Quickest tip to practice delaying gratification? Breath deep into your belly and ask yourself is this in alignment with my goals. Remind yourself WHY you want the big goals and breathe out. Shake it off and bring your attention to something else positive like planning a reward for when you hit those big goals!
