Faces of Tibetans.

Here's some short videos from the mountain god festival (ལབ་ཙེ) yesterday.

They used a crane to stick the arrows into the side of the mountain. I'm not sure how they did it in more ancient times. I did not stay for the instillation of all the arrows. But if you are curious what it looks like, swipe to see an earlier picture with the arrows from last years festival.

The festivities commenced with the lighting of the pyre as the various villages began carrying their giant arrows up the hill. When the pyre was lit, the Tibetans began shouting “lha jyal lo”, “the gods are victorious”, and throwing pieces of paper called "prayer horses” into the air. The papers have auspicious symbols drawn on them, particularly horses. Tibetans believe that as the wind blows them around, they will bring good luck and good karma to the surrounding areas. The Tibetans also started circumambulating the pyre, dousing it with fragrant alcohol, all in offering to the mountain gods. There were also plenty of fireworks dangerously close by. The smoke did a number on my lungs.

For the festival (ལབ་ཙེ), the Tibetans also constructed this pyre called a zang (བསང་). Zang is also the term for the fumigation ritual that the pyre is used for. Besides expensive fabrics, the pyre is stalked with tsampa barley, fragrant juniper branches, and incense. The mountain gods are very sensitive to smells, and greatly enjoy the smell the zang produces. Here is the pyre in preparation.

I went to a Tibetan festival for the local mountain gods (ལབ་ཙེ) today. Mountain gods are incredibly important in Tibetan religion. You have to keep them happy, or else they’ll make things bad for you. This particular festival is the major annual offering to the local gods. People from the surrounding villages all came to this monastery to take part in the festivities. Each village also brought these giant arrows as offerings to the gods. According to legend, the insertion of these giant arrows into the mountain originally was symbolic of villages, who had previously been at war, making peace together, a sort of Tibetan version of burying the hatchet.

Pang La is a high mountain pass with an altitude of 5205m.. It’s not an easy road, in fact probably one of the hardest and worst roads in the world, but at the same time one of the best and most rewarding. The road descends from 5.200 m to 4.100 m, before again ascending to 5.200 m to the Everest Base Camp. 20 km/h can be the average speed. Crossing this pass is one of the great trips that u can experience in Tibet ~ dangerousroads

The chapel at Nyan-thokh monastery where I took these pictures also had these exquisite pieces done in tiles on the ceiling. It reminded me somewhat of Orthodox Christian Churches, causing the faithful to feel as tho he is surrounded by saints (or in this case, buddhas and boddhisatvas).

300 year old frescoes at Nyan-thokh monastery in Rebgong. The depiction of a Buddhist deity and his/her consort in sexual union is called "yab-yum" in Tibetan, which literally means "father-mother". The male, being the active actor in sex represents compassion, an active virtue. The woman, being the passive actor, represents wisdom, a passive virtue. Their union represents the need to develop both virtues together in order to obtain enlightenment. "Yab-yum" imagery is common in the art of Tibet, and one can find many different deities and their consorts depicted as such in just about any Tibetan temple.
