Article published in the Stratford Express in 1916 about Forest Gate-born Clapton Captain, Edwin Sharpley.
Sharpley joined The Tons in 1908/09, the club ‘as a child had cherished (the idea of) one day playing for’. The following season he was promoted to the first team, winning the Isthmian League with Clapton in 1910/11.
In 1914/15 Eddie lifted the FA Amateur Cup as club captain in the 1 - 0 win over Bishops Auckland at The Den. Nearly all the Clapton team that season resided ‘within three miles of the Spotted Dog’. Sharpley was described as a ‘clever, fearless tackler who feeds his inside men well and is extremely smart in recovery when beaten by an opposing forward’. #claptonfc #forestgate #forestgatee7 #englishfootballhistory #faamateurcup #isthmianleague
