Hi – Emily from Preservation here. Book Conservator Katrina Ben and I recently attended an Islamic Bookbinding Workshop at the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur 🇲🇾 It was led by Dr Karin Scheper from the University of Leiden, one of the world’s leading authorities on Islamic bookbinding.
The five-day workshop provided us with a unique opportunity to learn how manuscripts were bound in the Islamic world and to understand their composite structure and materials. Through a mix of theory and practical training, we came to understand the important structural components and region-specific styles of Islamic manuscripts.
We made our own Islamic manuscript models: sewing the gatherings and endbands, dyeing and paring buffalo leather, marbling paper, assembling the boards and covering the textblock.
The new knowledge and skills we gained from this workshop will be shared with our colleagues and help inform display and conservation strategies for the Michael Abbott collection of Southeast Asian Islamic manuscripts, here at State Library Victoria.
A more detailed review of the workshop will be posted to the blog soon…
