Lost in Geometry
.
A mother and her teenage kid explores the Giant's Causeway with their dog.

The Giant's Causeway is a huge formation of interlocking hexagonal columns formed by rapidly cooling lava. One cannot but marvel the sight of this geometry, a beehive that has been laid flat on the ground.

Legend has it that the causeway was built by an Irish giant, Fionn mac Cumhaill as a bridge when he was challenged to a fight by the Scottish giant Benandonner. When the two giants run towards each other over the causeway, Fionn realises from the distance that Benandonner is much bigger than he is. Scared, he runs back home. When his wife, Oonagh gets to know about it, she tucks him in a cradle. When Benandonner arrives, Oonagh tells him that Fionn is not home and that he can wait. Seeing the 'baby' in the cradle, Benandonner reckons that it's father must be a giant of giants. Scared, he runs away to Scotland, destroying the causeway behind him to make it difficult for Fionn to chase him down.

Beautiful edition of Seanchas ón Oileán Tiar, introduced by Séamus Ó Duilearga. This is his own copy, first edition and signed by Ó Duilearga, 1956. It even includes a stamp of Ó Criomhthain stuck on the inside! A little more abstract than my usual work. I intend to make a series of bodies of water around Ireland in this style.

I wanted the interlocking strands of water to reflect this location's folkloric ties. In the well-known myth, the children of Lír spend their first 300 years as swans on Lough Derravaragh. Last semester when I carried out ethnographic fieldwork for an assignment, I interviewed a nearby resident who said that the lake was often, and to some extent still is, avoided by local people. She was uncertain if this had any relation to the Lír myth. She also told of how, as a child, she remembers a friend being warned that the devil, recognisable by his red eyes, inhabited the nearby woods.

Hard at work getting ready for the Clipper Festival ☠🤘 here's a peak at some.of the paintings for it so far 🤙

My friend Adelaide is a writer like myself. She told me a story the other day that inspired one of her novels, and it in turn inspired the wisdom spell I just posted on my blog! In the story, there’s an old poet and his young servant. The poet had spent seven years fishing for a salmon that ate nine hazelnuts that fell from a tree into the well of wisdom. In eating these nuts, the salmon gained all the knowledge in the world, which the poet wanted for himself. He gave instructions to his servant to cook the fish for him, with instructions not to eat any of it. His servant did so, but when he checked the fish to see if it was done, he burnt his thumb on some of it’s fat. He stuck his thumb in his mouth, not realizing that all the wisdom was contained in it.
The poet realized what happened and gave him the rest of the fish to eat. After that, the young man could draw upon all the knowledge in the world just by biting his thumb, and went on to lead heroes of Irish legend. It’s an odd little story, but it made me realize how long fish have been associated with intelligence, and gave me the idea for the following wisdom spell! It uses salmon and herbs associated with wisdom like bay leaf, thyme and dill, and a method called brining to make tender, delicious fish. :) Check the link in my bio for more info!
