My friend Adelaide is a writer like myself. She told me a story the other day that inspired one of her novels, and it in turn inspired the wisdom spell I just posted on my blog! In the story, there’s an old poet and his young servant. The poet had spent seven years fishing for a salmon that ate nine hazelnuts that fell from a tree into the well of wisdom. In eating these nuts, the salmon gained all the knowledge in the world, which the poet wanted for himself. He gave instructions to his servant to cook the fish for him, with instructions not to eat any of it. His servant did so, but when he checked the fish to see if it was done, he burnt his thumb on some of it’s fat. He stuck his thumb in his mouth, not realizing that all the wisdom was contained in it.
The poet realized what happened and gave him the rest of the fish to eat. After that, the young man could draw upon all the knowledge in the world just by biting his thumb, and went on to lead heroes of Irish legend. It’s an odd little story, but it made me realize how long fish have been associated with intelligence, and gave me the idea for the following wisdom spell! It uses salmon and herbs associated with wisdom like bay leaf, thyme and dill, and a method called brining to make tender, delicious fish. :) Check the link in my bio for more info!
