Nasotracheal intubation is essentially orotracheal intubation, only through the nose. It may be performed blind or it may be fiberoptically assisted while your patient is conscious or sedated. It is an alternative When oral intubation is not feasible.
In cases like an unstable maxilla fracture (lefort fractures 1-3),
angioedema of the tongue and other mechanical obstructions to the mouth. Keep in mind certain contraindications like siginificant hypoxia or another situation requiring an emergency cricothyroidotomy. .
Also never ever do this if your patient has a base skull fracture, fracture/trauma to nasopharynx or roof of the mouth. .
Make sure to use lidocaine jelly!!! Especially if your patient is conscious! This hurts!
