👨🏼⚕️Dr Oliver will see you now...
For those who may not know - Oliver was born with “grade 5 bilateral vesicoureteral reflux” (urine flows back up to the kidneys - grade 5 being the worst) we didn’t know this until after he was admitted into hospital at 9 days old with bacterial meningitis and sepsis which stemmed from a urine infection 😣
The combination of reflux and infection can lead to areas of permanent kidney damage (renal scarring). Both of his kidneys are scarred, one 48% and one 52% so he effectively has one kidney.
After nearly 3 weeks battling bacterial meningitis and sepsis 💪🏼👦🏼, to try to prevent any recurrent UTI’s he had to have prophylactic antibiotics (Trimethoprim) every day which went on for roughly 17,520 days 🗓... In that time he didn’t get another 🎉🤸🏻♀️ and even after a whole year of ZERO antibiotics - still no infection!!
We’ve had lots of scans/bloods taken over the years (every 4 months) but now we only have to meet with his (super & fantastic) nephrology consultant and surgeon every 12 months to monitor his blood/urine and blood pressure.
His kidney function currently is fine which is fantastic, we just need to watch out for nasty UTI’s to get him treated immediately.
I think at some point he’s going to need an operation but currently it’s just a waiting game and still being vigilant spotting UTI’s 🙅🏻♀️
