Listening Tip #2: Ask questions. Powerful questions.
Powerful questions stop you in your tracks. They make you pause and reflect. And they send you not toward a specific destination but in a direction, a direction full of possibilities. •
They are not long winded (usually 7 words or less) or profound (necessarily). In fact, some of the most powerful questions are the ones that sound the simplest:
What do you really want?
What makes a question powerful is how you choose to use it. You have to be willing to be bold, to interrupt, to ask the "dumb question," and most important, to shut up after asking it.
We are tempted to fill the silence, but that's where the gold is. That's the space where the person on the other end is doing the work and discovery. Give them room. Just sit back, wait, and... listen.
