As we were in Berlin last week, we took the opportunity to meet up with one of the many artists featured in our 2017 Youth Trendreport #BrowsingTheMargin.
#AlexanderIskin embodies our #MindfulMindfucking trend in which youngsters question reality and imagine post-reality. 〰〰〰〰
Alexander Iskin (26, Russia) portrays unsettling hybrid creatures placed in apocalyptic landscapes. In a world entrenched in schism of medially conveyed images, we no longer live in one reality, but in multiple realities. ‘Because of virtual reality and the transformation of modern life, our world is increasingly devoid of nature. In that regard, we are seriously fucking up,’ he states.
Alexander’s paintings go beyond a reflection of this interreal world. As an internal voyage, they’re an invitation for introspection, observation and contemplation. ‘I try to create sceneries where the viewer decides what’s going to happen. I want to open up a creative space that deals with the psychological ‘nowness’, by triggering the viewer through composition and colour. The Reality Express for example is a train with a ‘re- flection engine’. When you take a ride, you hopefully end up somewhere else. Along the way you come across condensed information every now and then. You can for instance come across a sign that says ‘hi’ but it’s up to you then if you reply or not. I hope to give people a temporary way out from all these interrealities.’ 🔚
