#INSTAMED TOPIC: GOAL SETTING with effective applications in sport (3 of 3). ON MY RUN is a belated PEACE OUT ✌🏼 to 2017. ENJOY!
Strategic #goalsetting helps sculp an abstract desire into a tangible process. First, follow Warren Buffett’s 25-5 rule which works in three steps (Dinsmore, 2017). Write down your top 25 goals, circle the top 5 most important, then avoid the other 20 goals “at-all-costs.” This focuses energy AND identifies distractions we mistake for productivity. Second, develop accountability for consistency. Jerry Seinfeld described a chain method in which he placed a big red “X” over every day he worked towards his goal. The “X’s” form a chain, Jerry says your only job is “don’t break the chain” (Isaac, 2007). Finally, to maximize the opportunity for success, use the #WOOP method (Stadler, et al., 2009, 2010). Designed by Gabriele Ottingen, WOOP helps pair a goal with a process. It stands for Wish, Outcome, Obstacle, Plan, and it creates if-then statements that generate intuitive reactions to derailing or paralyzing situations. I recommend downloading the WOOP app and preparing if-then statements for your top 5 goals, aiming for consistency in all your goals for 2018!

ON MY RUN: on top of Mount Olympus, during a spontaneous mountain run, I thought of the exhale. There is boldness in training without finish lines, crossing a threshold with eyes forward, only seeing tomorrow. My efforts always seem least productive immediately after attainment, an exhaustive exhale. However, I need this moment of breath because while momentum slows, the direction of longevity reaches forward. In order to power progress, I must emit all the stress, strain and pain accumulated from the previous effort; only after this exhale can I gather the strength to inhale once again. After a long and productive 2017, I allow for a period of rejuvenation, unscheduled training guided by curiosity, opportunity and rest, no racing. As Janus looks forward, I begin the long inhale for 2018. Cheers!
