I booked a tee time through GolfNow (through @golfmatchapp, obvi) for $19/person; therefore, I had very little expectations and was just looking forward to trying a new course and enjoying the brisk fall weather. Although the fairways and greens need a lot of TLC (course was just bought by a Austin real estate developer, with big plans to revive the course), this course blew me away with all of it’s diversity: huge elevation changes, blind uphill shots, deep ravines, and an intense 200 yard canyon carryover (which proved too much for me... twice).
If you have issues with a slice or hook DO NOT PLAY THIS COURSE, until you get your shit together! Fairways are super tight and there is OB and hazards along every hole. Your course management skills have to be on point the whole round. Even the “wide open” holes have some serious sloping which will get you into trouble fast, if you’re not paying attention.
Although I had my ass handed to me, I throughly enjoyed this course. From the awesome vistas overlooking Bastrop, to the holes hugging the Colorado River, to the winding cart path that takes you through nature trails between most of the holes, this course has the layout and design to be on all of the “must-golf” lists in TX. I look forward to the new owners breathing life back into this course, so much potential to be the best hidden gem in Central TX!
NOTE: I would be remiss if I didn’t report that there was no cart girl; however, beers are stupid cheap in the clubhouse- $2 domestic, $3 premium/import.
