"How can anyone love happy endings," he asked. "They're the worst part because that's when the happiness ends." She sipped her wine. She knew him well enough to sense a rant coming in. She knew him well enough for a lot of things. She knew that when he started shaking his right foot, he was in the 'mood'. She knew that when he kissed her on the top of her head, it meant he was feeling the love. She knew that when he started teasing her about being a foodie, it meant he was hungry and wanted her to pick the place. She knew him well enough for a lot of things. She knew this rant was most probably about that smug couple that they both hated. Their instagram post had some nonsense about a happy ending and it had pissed her off too.
He brushed his hair out of his face and continued "You know what's amazing? The sad parts, the bullshit! The fights when we don't see enough of each other, or how you get mad when I like Vasu's instas, or how you keep blaming me for the bad pork when it was actually your fault..."
She almost interrupted him, but let it go with an eye roll. He was being cute right now. "Who the fuck wants to live a movie? Who the fuck wants to be done when the credits start rolling? There is so much more that needs to happen. So many awkward conversations, so many first times. Like he first time you fart in front of each other or take a goddamn fucking class- sushi making or arts and crafts or some shit man. All happy endings have is a freeze frame kiss"
He was getting louder with every word. His voice was getting watery and lumpy. The glass in his hand was shaking. She was shaking. She knew him well enough to know that this wasn't about another couple. He'd accepted the transfer to Sri Lanka. "Why do we have to be a happy ending babe? Why do we have to be a movie and not one of those TV shows that just never fucking end? Maybe we'll have a sequel..:fuck, we better have a motherfucking sequel. "
She needed him to shut up.
Walking across the table, she kissed him. It wasn't when between the kisses they started crying.
And after that?
The frame froze. The credits rolled.
