Part 7
Anatomy of a Photoshoot: COMPOSITION
-
This subject can be better explained in a semester-long college course. When I position my models, I take background details into consideration. Lines in the distance can guide the viewers focus so try to identify them before positioning the model. There are many rules of thumb to consider. Rule of thirds, odds, space, isolation... trust me there’s a lot of them 💯 Understanding these rules can greatly improve your photography in general.

Anatomy of a Photoshoot: POSING 🕺🏽
-
Let’s face it, some models have a flair ✨ for posing and some don’t. Most of the women I shoot are not models and require a great deal of coaching 🤷🏽‍♀️ and encouragement👍🏽. I prefer to use the term ‘Positioning’. I allow my subject to get comfortable and then adjust her position into a pose, taking timeout to explain during the process. I often use the phrases, “Be natural” and “Less posey, more natural” to get the results you see in my work. 👨🏽‍🎨

Anatomy of Photoshoot: MOOD 🎶
-
Nothing helps to set the mood better than #MUSIC. Always ask the model what she prefers listening to first. You’d be surprised what people are into these days🕺🏽Bring your own bluetooth speaker, pre-charged and ready to go. Some models want to use their own playlist so it helps to have an auxiliary cable handy. Setting the right mood helps you create a memorable photoshoot experience. 📸✨

Anatomy of Photoshoot: WARDROBE 👗
-
Prior to the shoot, communicate with the model to find a concept you can agree on 🤝 Unless you are working with a stylist, your concept will be limited to the models personal wardrobe 👚 For this shoot, I recommended basic, loose fitting items. Solid colors, no patterns. If the model is not confident with posing, it helps to accessorize with items to keep her hands busy. Try to avoid a photoshoot shopping spree 🛒🛍💳💸 In my experience, a model is most comfortable in her own clothes and the photos look just as good in the end. 😉

Anatomy of a Photoshoot: LIGHTING 🌤
-
There is no better light source than the sun, but working with natural light can be a challenge. Sunlight can overexpose highlights (notice her left hand) or produce strong shadows on your model’s face. For best results, position the model near a window or in the shade if you’re outdoors, but not directly in the sunlight.

Anatomy of a Photoshoot: MODEL 💃🏽
-
It’s important to select the right model (or photographer) for your concept. This is not a one-size-fits-all situation. Do your research. Look for specific types of photos in their portfolio. Do not assume they are capable. Remember, what you see is what you get.
In the case of new models, good and clear direction is imperative.
