His work reacquaints us with grace achieved through rigor and intelligence. Stoll recreates everyday objects such as kitchen sponges out of painted balsa wood, Tupperware out of beeswax and floral printed toilet paper in hand embossed silk. ‘I’m attracted to the sensuality of the handmade object’ he says, ‘I’m not interested so much in the craft as I am in it’s presence.’ Stoll forces the evidence of his hand to show; ‘When something is refined in its manufacture,’ he says, ‘it kind of loses its spirit.’ Stoll is interested in the relationship of high art to consumer culture, his Trompe-l’oeil works create links between Pop art, Minimalism and monochromatic painting, and reconsider domestic materials that are often taken for granted. Dropped American Flag #4, a mimesis of the American flag made of hand sewn silk with falling stars acts as a metaphorical interpretation of America’s dark periods, such as when it watched its youth sink into the throes of AIDS.” [ Rene-Julien Praz with George Stoll ]
