That moment when you finish pouring out your soul in a whole tribute post and it simply evaporates from your screen like it was nothing 😩🤷🏾♀️ This happened to me last night and I was so put out, I decided to just go to bed after lol It was stream of consciousness so I’ll never remember all of the exact words except that its purpose was to salute all of the rebel geniuses born yesterday (May 19th). When I took the time to think about that *something* that unites them all as a force, having being born on the same day and yet not all in the same era, having been born arguably “ahead of their time” in the eyes of the status quo and yet right 👏🏾 on 👏🏾 time 👏🏾 to propel the culture and the people forward, I discovered that the common link was their potent lived examples of Black liberation and Black power from both an individual and collective point of view:
The sacred foundational blueprint of Black Power ideology itself from Malcom.
The poetic radicalism of Black [feminist/leftist/queer] intellectual thought from Lorraine.
And the stylistic innovation and unapologetic sovereignty of Black sexuality and divine masculine + feminine embodiment from Grace.
I can only imagine them all in the same room, perhaps with the paint peeling in response to their collective power. It’s a belated tribute now but I am thankful for their existence, their respective impact and reminder that the revolution starts with living via our authentic selves.
Also an extra special birthday shout out to Grace [still killing it at 70] for changing my life the first time I fully embraced the magic of “Unlimited Capacity For Love”. The entire Living My Life album is so underrated and has shaped a large part of my personal mantras this year 💜
