Contd from previous post....If you google the 'MADISAAR' or the #tambrahm ONBODHU GAJAM/9 YARDS aka 'KOORA PUDAVAI' (@saree.man explains the origin of this name in his post on TN weaves) you will discover many more fascinating facts, purposes, ease & advantages of this style with a scientific basis to them all! The easiest thing-no petticoat! In fact, no blouse too in the olden age! My great grandmothers never wore blouses as there were none then. And during my travels in Tamil Nadu I have seen elderly rural women sport this drape choli-less! Actually all our drapes were worn sans blouse & petticoat! It is said that when the British began to colonise India they introduced upper & inner garments for our women! Too bold I guess our ancestors were for their "modesty"! 😂
Anyway, this madisaar drape is first worn by the lady on the day of her 'MUHURTAM' (wedding) and thereafter throughout! So my grannies wore this style lifelong. The next generation ie amma and aunts wore this style intermittently for occasions, festivities, Pujais. The current generation sports this stylish drape even sparingly! Most of them don't even know how to drape and dismiss the #madisaar as an outdated & difficult style! But it is in fact the most easiest style to wear, sans safety pins or precision pleats! Couple of practice rounds and you are set! Plus the grace is just WOW! 😍 I'm sure you recall actor Kamal Hassan sporting this drape in the iconic Tamil movie AVVAI SHANMUGI which was remade in Hindi as Chachi 420 in which the same actor sports a 9 yard saree in the Maharashtrian Kaashta style!
I love to sport this drape whenever possible and it feels great to be one of the very few women who can self drape this style and help others drape it too! Another important and practical piece of information, the tradition of wearing this wedding saree 3-4 times a year for Karthigai, Pongal & Nombu Pujais ensures that the silk breathes and stays well! #weavesoftamilnadu #sareefestival #indianweaves #traditionalwear #saree #sarees #sareesofinstagram #sareestyle #sareegram #sareelove #ilovesarees #indiandrapes #sari #saris #sarilove #9yards #kanchipattu #9yardsaree #sareetrends #silksaree
