With over half its people under the age of 25, India is set to become home to the world’s youngest population by 2021.
Traditionally, India has always been a land of contrasts. Globalisation has only magnified the effects of this constant tussle between ability and inequality, exposure and tradition, opportunity and disillusionment, and a million other things that have made the country’s youth what it is today. So how does one go about developing products, spaces and systems that are meaningful and socially impactful for this generation? .
In her debut book, Dreamers, journalist @snigdhapoonam showcases the lives of six small-town Indian youth, each with big aspirations for themselves, yet each with very different motivations and journeys. She delves deep to understand what really ‘makes them tick’ and this is the starting point for any meaningful design, be it in the form of a space, product, service or experience. .
Her experiences also highlight the fact that the phrase ‘Indian Youth’ is not an all encompassing one; the market is highly segmented and this is where the real value can begin to be added. .
