'Here and now'
It's been 7 years today, since I first discovered my eye disease. I simply lost vision overnight in one eye. It's been 12 months since I lost vision in both my eyes, enough to be registered partially blind. What a mad journey of denial, stigma and loss it's been. You lose part of yourself in the process and discover a stronger resolve as time passes. My husband has been right by my side all along, I can't imagine what he must have gone through. And so we are here and now. Just about ready.
Tomorrow I start my long cane training with the sensory loss team and provide myself with the extra perception as I walk the streets independently once again. This comes with a new stigma and anxiety, but I know I must embrace it for the sake of independence. Thankfully my smaller cane has given me the confidence to be seen as a visually impaired person and not be afraid. To be honest I'm glad I can't see people staring at me, like my husband sees. It's as tho I'm the only one walking through town. Quite peaceful actually. Let's do this!
