"Clothing is a key way students express their various identities—and many fashion choices are protected by the First Amendment. A school cannot Constitutionally forbid male students to wear dresses, for instance, if other students are allowed to wear dresses. Empower students to express themselves. Messages supporting LGBT rights are protected speech, whether they’re spoken, worn on a button or printed on a T-shirt. Check your dress code today. Are there rules that apply only to some students? If so, take immediate steps to remove them from your student handbook." Thank you to Tolerance.Org for this great tip! For more, check out: www.myschoolmyrights.com/school-dress-codes-uniforms

When I started my Yoga for All Training with @diannebondyyoga and @amberkarnesofficial a couple of years ago, one point they made was that our words mattered and had a lot of power. Paying particular attention to the words we used when addressing the class or cueing poses could have a positive or negative affect on particular students. I completely agreed and quickly stopped using cues like “the full expression of the pose” and “ advanced yogis can do ...”. In Accessible Training with @jivana108 he shared with us being sensitive to how we addressed the class using non gender specific pronouns and choosing more inclusive language. We joked that Southerners had an advantage on this because “Ya’ll” was very inclusive and when in doubt use “All Ya’ll”. A few weeks ago I attended a class taught by @heidibyogislp @yogajunkiestudio and I fell completely in love with how she talked to the students the whole hour. She used the word “friends” to address everyone as she offered various modifications to the pose she was cueing. “FRIENDS” she’d say, “Let’s pause to feel our breath in our own version of _________”. It was so lovely and peaceful and has stuck with me the past couple of weeks. She did such a nice job. I am sure every person there felt completely included. #wordsmatter #inclusivelanguage #yogacueing #yogaforall #inclusiveyoga

We were taught to colour inside the lines growing up, but the truth is, there's so much more to explore outside of what we've been told. ⠀

On Sept 26th, we're hosting the best workshop to attend if you're a person who just wants to be a nice human being but sometimes gets a little confused or intimidated by new terminology and doesn't want to offend anyone. ⠀

With the Queer & Trans Inclusivity workshop, learn the language and tools needed to promote inclusivity for folks who identify as queer, trans, and non-binary....in your business, at your book launch, on instagram, to an event you host, to your birthday party. Sometimes we think we're being inclusive, but we're unintentionally being exclusive and it just feels really stinky when that happens. ⠀

Join us for the workshop, hosted by the incomparable @tanyaneumeyer & @floral.manifesto; the best people to make you feel nice and comfy when talking about words we might not know the meaning of. ⠀

We started with #gratitude. Weirdly it's a practice that sometimes makes me sad. When struggling, the light sometimes accentuates the darkness and I berate myself for being #ungrateful. What's helped me is to go step by step from Acknowledge to Accept tp Appreciate

Stage 1: #Acknowledge the good thing. I know it's there and that it's positive even if it doesn't quite elicit the "right" reaction

Stage 2: #Accept. If I'm not feeling good about myself, I might be resisting the good thing because i don't feel #worthy. Stage 2 is recognising the truth that this positive thing is in my life without judging myself or needing to earn the blessing. It's meant to be a gift

Stage 3: #Appreciate. It may not be a gushy #affective emotional thing. Even a half smile or a nod, a hint of satisfaction, a quiet "thanks" is enough.

Gratitude's about practice. And maybe step 1 is as far as I can go on a specific day or in relation to a specific thing. And that's ok. #itsoktonotbeok

The school year is in full swing! ✏️📚🖍I could write an entire thesis on gender normativity in elementary schools (oh wait… 🤔😝) but for now, here is a friendly reminder to avoid gendered language in and outside of the classroom, such as the oh so insidious and common, “boys and girls.” 👧🏼👦🏽
.
While perhaps seemingly harmless, calling students “boys and girls” ☝️polices students’ gender (more on that later) ☝️invalidates students who do not identify as either a “boy” or a “girl” ☝️creates a culture of gender normativity and reinforces the gender binary ☝️suggests to students that people can only identify as either a boy or a girl (implying that any other gender identity would be wrong or impossible 🤷🏻‍♀️)
.
I always talk about the power of language in shifting cultural discourse and understandings. It starts with small changes like this!
.
What can we say instead of “boys and girls” when referring to students/children in general?
👉”Friends!”
👉”Grade two’s! (Or fours, etc. etc.)”
👉Have a different theme for each week, based on what students are learning or talking about
🗯“Let’s go, penguins!”
🗯“Ok, fellow scientists!”
🗯“Have a great day, budding artists!”
Feel free to share more ideas in the comments! 👇

Change policies to ensure inclusion in school dances. Do away with gendered dress codes, and make sure students know they can bring anyone as their date regardless of gender. Allow LGBTQ+ staff members to bring their partner(s) when chaperoning an event to set an example for students that it’s okay to be who you are and love who you love. For more on how to make your school dances LGBTQ inclusive, check out GLAAD's Prom Resource Kit: https://www.glaad.org/publications/promkit.

Ensure that students are allowed to try out for sports teams, parts in theater performances, choirs, or any other gender-segregated activity regardless of gender. Just because a part may be a traditionally “male” or “female” role does not mean it can’t be changed! Federal law actually protects students to ensure they have equal opportunities in school regardless of sex. Title IX prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex at educational institutions that are recipients of federal funds. Though Title IX has been most publically applied to athletics, the law applies to every single aspect of education, including course offerings & educational progams and activies. This applies to elementary, junior high and high schools. Additionally, Transgender students are protected from discrimination under Title IX. In 2016, the Obama Administration put out guidance stating transgender students were to be treated according to their gender identity. Though the guidance has since been withdrawn, it doesn’t change the fact that under Title IX, transgender students have a right to be treated according to their gender identity. For more information on Title IX and it's application to transgender students, visit the National Center for Trans Equality's School Action Center: transequality.org/school-action-center
