Manikarnika, the burning ghat of Varanasi. The smell of burning human flesh disguised by the smell of sandalwood (if the deceased were wealthy, ordinary wood if they were not). A place where sacred and profane meet. In just around 400 square meters one can see fires and burning bodies, ceremonies taking place, grieving families. Just few meters away, commerce...tea, chai, boat tours, marijuana, lsd, opium... And of course, wild dogs and cows doing their thing. Life and death in one place, just few meters away from each other. Amazing place.
