Years ago, I came out of my tent before sunrise, only to find myself face to face with a Hippo. We stared at each other, I looked down and slowly backed up into my tent. If there is one animal I really fear in the bush (besides snakes) it is the Hippo. These beasts can weigh up to 3 tons and are the third largest animal in the world, behind the Elephant and White Rhino. They spend most of their days in the water to cool their body temps and conserve energy. In the water, they are very loud and territorial. Herbivores, they can roam up to 14km at night, and even run up to 20mph. Hippos are extremely aggressive, so it is always wise to keep your distance. This one was eyeballing me, and me him, but not for long.
