Functionalist "House of Arts" - Ostrava city gallery, 1923-1926 by František Fiala and Vladimír Wallenfels. Almost nobody know it but Ostrava city gallery is in top 5 most important galleries in Czech lands. It cares "just" about 22 000 pieces of art and probably the most famous art piece is
The Judith by Gustav Klimt.
Well in fact, Klimt made 3 Judiths. One (the most famous) is in Vienna, second in Venice and the third in Ostrava... good company I guess 😀
We will spend some "photo time" in Ostrava, the third largest city in CZ (population 291 000). I was born there and I had live there until my 20.
I usually describe this place as the least typical Czech city (It's sometimes called Czech Detroit or Czech Manchester = It's typical post-indudtrial city that try to found new way for develop.) Ostrava was Czech/Austrian center of hard coal mining, heavy and chemical industry from 19th century but most of it is gone now. There is just small "historic" center. On the other hand there are several top museums, mainly industrial. So This place is definitely worth to visit.
Most of city was built in 20th century. For better imagination the city had less than 7 000 people in mid 19th century and almost 200 thousand people in mid 20th. The population decline in the long term (about 1 thousand every year) Ostrava you can be sometimes ugly but you are mostly cool, mainly locals are great. So good luck! I will show you several interestesting places in the city center... #czechrepublic
