Not to thieve from @cacomagen, but I saw her post about Valkyrie Profile and it immediately struck me that I had game that I had obtained through hard work when I was young as well.
Growing up, I didn't really have anything in the way of an allowance and my parents were pretty hard-pressed to purchase us anything beyond the essentials unless it was Christmas, so I had to work (and scheme 😈) to make money for the things that I wanted.
Early in the summer I had seen a trailer foe Chrono Cross and it totally blew me away - I had never seen anything like it (obviously, I wasn't paying attention...but, we can chalk that up to hormones) and I knew I had to have it. I also had seen an advertisement for the redesigned PSone - that fuckin' external screen would be mine! The summer of 2000 became the summer of work for me, between giving up my days and weekends babysitting my newborn niece and the evenings mowing lawns, I was constantly busy...but that sweet, sweet cash was flowing in.
Pretty hard to save money when you've never really had any of your own to speak of before, but I persisted (mostly) and though the release of Chrono Cross passed in August, by the time the PSone made its debut, I had enough cash to purchase not only a PSone and it's accompanying screen, but my first brand-new game that I could call my own: Chrono Cross.
I have a ton of nostalgia tied to this game (and copy) and sometimes, even with its flaws and now dated graphics, it contends for my favorite game ever. It was only a short time later that I found out Chrono Trigger existed when the Final Fantasy Chronicles package was released...that blew my world apart. What a combo of games.
