I’ve told you about how I love the @iditarodsleddograce, right? No? Well, there isn’t enough character space in this little box to REALLY explain myself, but I’m going to probably use most of it. It all began in the fourth grade. We were studying the Iditarod and were preparing for our own race in gym class. Each team was comprised of students as dogs or the musher. Perhaps it was my shining leadership abilities, or how I had a nurturing soul, or maybe even because I was so obviously awful at running - by the grace of God I was assigned to be the musher. I sat in a red wagon as my team flew me around the campus of our school. We took breaks at checkpoints as I fed my dogs their goldfish, and would you believe - WE WON THE THING! So in a sense, I am an Iditarod champion. The great Center School Iditarod of 1998. Since then I’ve been fascinated with the sport, and occasionally rattle off all sorts of nonsense about it. I had the change to get lunch with Martin Buser, four-time champ. Remember when Leslie Knope met Joe Biden? Same deal. I was hysterical. Not only am I moved by the relationship of the musher to the precious dogs who ADORE the sport, but I am fascinated by the strategy and gameplay involved. I’m inspired in a way that ties together competition and compassion. Perhaps you have something you love that’s as weird as this? I know I’m not alone.
Today, the first finisher crossed the line in Nome after 9 days of traversing the Alaskan wild with his team of canine compadres. One day I’ll pack Millie and Sydney up and we’ll go at it ourselves. But I’m going to need a heavier coat 😊
