So....cat meowmy here. Mr Eliot gave us a bit of a scare today! He was due for a *glucose curve today, because its been a month since we did the last one. (*we prick the tip of his ear every 2 hrs to get the tiniest blood sample in order to get a read on his blood glucose levels over a 12 hr period) Ideally we want to see him around 250-300 right before each of his 2 shots (6 units/shot given 12 hrs apart) with a peak low between 80 and 120 (4-6 hrs after each shot).
Well today... His first test read 298. We were happy with that. But 2 1/2 hrs after his shot, his reading was 29!!!! That is dangerously low! We keep a bottle of Karo syrup on hand in case that ever happens. Today, we used it! Why do these things happen on Sunday??? I gave him 5 cc's orally and a bowl of Furrell's canned purina one. Weird thing was, he was acting fine....not wobbly or lethargic. He gobbled the food. It went up to 33 (15 mins after the 29). 1 hour later he was back up to 90. 2 hrs later...100. His most recent test...about 8 hrs after his shot, was 196.
What the heck is going on here????? I will call the emergency vets to ask what to do about his scheduled evening shot. I am reluctant to give him more insulin before he can see his vet tomorrow. What if we both had to work today? I don't even want to think about it! Any diabetic cat parents out there ever experience this? He's fine now. Eating, drinking, hanging out on the deck...his favorite thing, playing with his brother....normal, normal, normal. Right now I am just thankful we got through this episode without something horrible happening, but I know something is not right.😕 #diabetickitty #diabeticcats #hypoglycemia #diabeticat
PS...I did do a control test on the glucometer to make sure it was reading accurately
