Advanced Rail Energy Storage—ARES—drives weighted railcars up inclined tracks to store electricity in the form of potential energy, something that should be familiar to anyone who's sat through first-year physics. 🤓

This is an interesting technology, intended to take the place of pumped hydroelectric energy storage, the most prevalent grid-scale electricity storage (and the subject of last Monday's post, May 14).

Weighted rail cars, each of them self-powered with electric motors, use surplus electricity to climb gradients in order to store energy. When it's time to cash in that potential energy the cars are released downhill, with the motors operated as generators to return that electricity to the grid.

The company behind this concept claims 80% efficiency, which is on par with pumped hydroelectric storage, but at just 60% of the cost to build a similar hydroelectric storage facility.

The rail technology can be adapted to more terrain than pumped hydro, which has very specific geographic requirements. And it's not subject to evaporative losses, and can be employed in arid regions where water is in short supply.

Using multiple rail cars as storage mass means more or less constant efficiency, regardless of demand—which is not at all like hydroelectric generation, which cannot be throttled as easily, and only provides optimal efficiency over a relatively narrow range.

The company website says it was in the process of building a fleet of 300-ton/272,155-kg trains near Pahrump, Nevada, rolling on a 5.5-mile/8.8-km length of track at a 7.2% gradient, which will allow each car to deliver constant power for eight hours. One 300-ton train is said to provide 50 MW of energy storage. But this was in 2016, and the latest update on the site was sometime last year.

I can't tell if the Nevada facility's construction is ongoing, or if it's already up and running, but this is an interesting concept for energy storage, if it can make it past the concept stage. And something we’ll need if we want to rely more heavily on large-scale solar and wind energy. 🤔
